Trading freedom for peace & well-being. Echoes of Huxley & Zamyatin. Politely overprotective society organized to prevent anxiety, conflict & exclusion. Impulse=taboo, selfhood repressed. Breaking conformism. Beautiful graphic play with text as The Sensor picks up dangerous words & colorizes them in The Graph. Guitarist Agustín Barrios. “The tuning fork is in your heart.” 2017

P9 “Push it away, Mira A. This moment. This feeling. The frustration.”

Living in Paris among the elite, Ella Lynch meets a handsome stranger and ends up going to his home country, #Paraguay, with him. Never marrying, she is effectively his wife, as they have multiple children together, he secedes his father as president, and the country devolves into war. I quite liked this—the perspective is unique and the extreme violence is balanced by a thread of wry humor.

Zoo Quest in Paraguay | David Attenborough

Final book for #readingtheamericas23!

I borrowed the book from my Mum, which includes Zoo Quests in Indonesia and #guyana too, but #paraguay is also available in a stand-alone book, tagged.

I loved this book, which is David mostly looking for armadillos in 1958.

In fact I‘ve loved this whole challenge - thank you Barbara and Jess for hosting! I cheated a little bit this year, and two books did a lot of the heavy lifting, covering a number ⬇️

squirrelbrain …of countries each. Those books are tagged below, and were amongst my favourites of the challenge. Also, two fiction books were my top and bottom. The Violin Conspiracy was my favourite, and I hated Really Good, Actually. Weirdly, I read both right at the start of the challenge in January / February. 12mo

So I'm a total lover of historical fiction so for me this was a great read. Romance and conflict (Paraguayan war) I knew very little about and engaging characters really kept me entertained. And may have led to many Google searches for things that I found interesting. #ReadingTheAmericas #bookspin @thearomaofbooks @librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Librarybelle Hooray! I‘m not familiar with this one…glad you liked it! 12mo

FINALLY finished this #FoodAndLit #Paraguay read!

Should I have bailed? Absolutely 😂 but I was so far through I persevered, especially since there aren‘t many Paraguay books in English.

Anyway it was okay. I learnt a bit, but I struggled with the narrative and never knew what period I was reading about, who that person was, and so on 😂

Texreader So impressed! I‘ve waded through books in the same sort of confusion so good for sticking it through!! 1y

Cinfhen How was your Paraguay book?? 1y
Daisey @Cinfhen It was a historical fiction that fit the prompt, but it was not great. I never felt truly invested in the characters‘ lives although there were good possibilities for emotional connections. Plus, I still don‘t understand the war that was described. I do not recommend it except as a Paraguay setting. 1y
Cinfhen I can‘t remember if I read a book for Paraguay yet…but im not even sure I‘d choose this one 😜 1y

My last read of May was simply wonderful! The #ReadAroundTheWorldChallenge country was #Guyana (though there are sections on #Indonesia and #Paraguay) and in the 1950s, Attenborough traveled to the remote parts of the globe to film and collect animals for his BBC program, Zoo Quest. You can hear Attenborough‘s distinctive voice & sheer joy & wonder leap off the page! This provides a window into the past in a fascinating manner! Includes photos!

Bookzombie OMG, are the plastic animals from your childhood or do you have a zoo near your that still does them? I went to our zoo a month or so ago and they didn‘t have those machines. #nostalgia 1y
rockpools Oh that sounds wonderful! Good find! 1y

TorieStorieS @Bookzombie The zoos around me still have these machines as Mold-A-Rama is a Chicagoland company! But two of these three are indeed relics of my childhood— the Komodo dragon is a bit more recent from a trip to the zoo about six years ago! 1y
TorieStorieS @rockpools I really loved it!! 1y
TorieStorieS @BookwormM Thank you for organizing this challenge!! 1y
Bookzombie @TorieStorieS I didn‘t know the name of the company. Thank you! 1y
TorieStorieS @Bookzombie No problem! Chicago‘s Museum of Science and Industry has a special exhibit featuring Mold-a-Rama right now! I can‘t wait to go! I think it lasts through the summer! 1y
