I‘ve been meaning to post this since my trip last month…
📗 Old Venus (signed) from George R. R. Martin‘s bookstore, Beastly Books
📕 The Painter, set in Santa Fe, found used in op.cit. books
Even though there are only 2 books, they‘re hardcover and they would only fit in my carry-on so I still feel this fits the definition of “haul.” 😅
The artist Vanessa Bell is Virginia Woolf‘s sister. This is a companion catalogue to an exhibition running at MK Gallery (Milton Keynes, UK). The first time I saw Vanessa Bell‘s art I was struck by her style and how her art is painting, crafts and interior decorating. I love how this catalogue shows this. I would have liked more depth in the writing but the images of Bell‘s art make up for it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

An artist living on an isolated island off the coast of Brittany just before WWI is visited by an eminent art critic, who used to be his mentor and now wants his portrait painted.
A series of monologues from the artist to the sitter while he's painting explore what has brought them that point. Although the ending is fairly predictable early on it is only in the last 30 pages that we learn the motivation behind it. Something of a tour de force.
