I wasn‘t really sure what to expect from this memoir/travelogue! My first experience with the author, this came out over two decades ago & it would be interesting to see if life on Karabati, a remote equatorial island has changed much. Troost balances coming in with paradise-like expectations & coming to see the somewhat literally sh*tty reality of island life. Watch out for the island dog chapter, but otherwise a truly fascinating listen!

I love WW2 books and I‘ve never heard of these women before. It was such a good read. I give it 5/5 stars!

#readingoceania2024 #vanuatu I am getting a bit tired of the “my year in ….” (Name of South Pacific island) format but he keeps things light and moving and you do catch a bit of history and culture although much of what you catch is being a foreigner there. I learned a bit about cannibalism. I am slowly getting a glimpse of the differences between all the countries in Oceania. Just wish I could locate some better literature along the way

BarbaraBB Yes it is really hard to find books related to all those islands. 6mo
Librarybelle Yes…it‘s hard to find books for some of these. 6mo

Another book I never would have read if it weren‘t for a Litsy challenge. In this book a hobbyist searches for the missing people in #Palau - the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of WWII. I found this short book to be very interesting. #ReadingOceania24

Librarybelle I love how these challenges help us find new-to-us authors and books! 6mo
BarbaraBB One of the bloodiest battles? Who would have thought. It‘s always refreshing and important to read about such events 6mo

This was okay to listen to, but I felt myself being disinterested and zoning out during other parts. I think part of my issue was that it was dated- so much has happened since the Obama administration. #ReadingOceania2024

mcctrish My personal opinion is SW has great ideas but subpar writing skills 6mo
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish I think you nailed it 6mo
Librarybelle I struggle listening to nonfiction. This one is on my to read list, so good to know about the dated material. 6mo

Karisa Beautiful place with a sad past… I didn‘t know much of that history. I‘d only heard of this island nation when watching an old season of Survivor this summer. 😅 So interesting! Thank you for sharing! 8mo

The new book is POINT NEMO!

Great audiobook just a hair under 4.5 stars! Love RC Bray! This was a fun sci-fi story … from the ISS down to a secluded island on Earth. Alien mushrooms cure cancer then want to take over the world. Heart pounding! Edge of seat fun! Give it a listen!
