So the great bare-handed mullet grab wasn‘t a trick. It wasn‘t possible after all.
Guess I‘ll have to come back another day and try again, Roy thought. That‘s what a real Florida boy would do.

I enjoyed this audiobook! Narrated by the author, this details not only the relationship with the titular Eastern screech owl, Alfie, but also some wider historical information and thoughts on humanity‘s relationship with the world at large. Alfie‘s presence certainly brightened Safina‘s time during the pandemic & I shared his worries as I thought about all the dangers facing Alfie, as well as appreciating the backyard wildlife Safina described!

#unpopularopinion I found the first couple hours dry & just can‘t get into it, which runs contrary to every single review I‘ve seen about this, & the fact that I‘ve loved all the other recs I‘ve tried from @Chelsea.Poole #auldlangspine list, so I think it may be more my frame of mind right now & the current mix of books I‘m reading, than just my reaction to this. I‘m going to keep it in mind to try again sometime in print instead of on audio.

Soubhiville I wasn‘t as absorbed in this one as I had been in her others that I have read, so it may not be just you. I found this one wasn‘t as compelling. I still picked it, because I did enjoy parts and learned. 4mo
IndoorDame @Soubhiville good to know, thanks 🙏💕 4mo
Chelsea.Poole I can see that! And I will say, the second half has stuck with me more than the first, especially the section about human impact on owl and conservation work. 4mo

I‘ve enjoyed several other of Ackerman‘s books about birds, so I was excited to see that she had a new one focused on owls.

The coolest thing I learned: to defend their nests or scare away threats an owl might dive bomb, and they can hit with many many times greater force than their body weight.

We need to do more to conserve these birds. Like most wildlife we‘ve destroyed so much of their habitat, many of them are in danger.

Soubhiville Also, all of the owls who portrayed Hedwig in the HP movies were male, because the male snowy owls are brighter white and less aggressive in general than the females. 🦉 4mo
Crazeedi I just purchased this book , and read a short book that had one of the chapters from this book about hummingbirds, fascinating. And I have this book on my tbr!! 4mo
Yenya1954 I will add this to my TBR list! 4mo

Mehso-so

This book is a YA novel about a group of unlikely middle school friends in Florida who work together to save owls from a big, bad corporation. It has a strong environmentalist streak, and the writing tends to portray all the adults as bumbling or corrupt, with just a few redeeming moments. Overall I didn‘t love it, I felt like the story could have been neater. But maybe I would appreciate this more if I read it at a younger age!

SamAnne I didn‘t know Hiaasen wrote YA. That‘s kind of funny. He is a big conservationist. Big advocate of Everglades Protection. 5mo
Erin.Elizabeth10 @SamAnne Yes, that makes a lot of sense! Maybe I should try some of his novels for adults. I would love to visit the Everglades. 5mo
SamAnne @Erin.Elizabeth10 fair warning: hi novels are hilarious but raunchy and over-the-top. And his older ones have language that has not aged well. People with sleazy developers, corrupt cops, hard bitten reporters and detectives. 5mo
Erin.Elizabeth10 @SamAnne okay that fits with this book too! At some moments the language felt dated, even for a kids book. 5mo
