I couldn't rate this book. It's well written, and the brain energy theory sounds plausible. I am skeptical of some of the solutions to mental illness, particularly the ketogenic diet. I can't speak to its efficacy until I've tried it. The book describes the theory in scientific terms involving mitochondria and the metabolic system. It's is fascinating, and parts are over my uneducated head. I will have to do my own research. I have a project now!

I haven‘t read/listened to a book about our food industry in a lot of yrs so thought this would be a good one. It was a bit science-y for me, but I also liked the information about studies & explanations about our bodies. My horror about our food industry was renewed, but I‘m not sure how to reduce my UPF intake. We don‘t have many non-UPF options in my area, except the farmers market in summer. Would have liked more of that info.

Tonight‘s comfort food: 🥔Baked Potato Soup

I may have gotten a little excited with the fake bacon bits🤷🏻‍♀️

This cookbook is great for whole foods plant-based comfort recipes. I need to explore more recipes in this one to see if I like her other meals.

Tamra Love it! 2mo
Ruthiella Yum 😋! That looks delicious. 2mo
AnishaInkspill this looks really good, one my fav things as a person who doesn't really cook is experiment, and yeah-well, what can I say 😂 😂 2mo
DogMomIrene @AnishaInkspill @Tamra @Ruthiella It‘s super yum. And since I still have leftover potatoes I‘ll be making more either Friday or Saturday😂 thank goodness it freezes well! 2mo

“It‘s not food. It‘s an industrially produced edible substance.”
Every so often a book comes along which stays with you long after you‘ve read it. For me this is one of those books. Just looking through a food product‘s ingredients list and feeling empowered to know what specific chemicals could be doing to my body is life changing. I am going to be thinking about a lot of this book for a long time to come.

ChaoticMissAdventures I think empowering is a great word for this book. I love how he framed things and I never felt like I was being shamed for my choices. It was a book that made me really mad though! 3mo
Mrs_B @ChaoticMissAdventures I understand! I‘m absolutely incredulous that this just isn‘t common knowledge and how much he has had to dig to find things out. 3mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Mrs_B for sure so much of it feels like common sense after he goes through it, and also like "of course companies hide this as much as possible". The baby formula chapter - I knew about but didn't KNOW about it and it made me so angry. 3mo
Mrs_B @ChaoticMissAdventures for me it was the revelation of how much “food science/research” is “funded” by coca-cola. 3mo

I‘m learning a lot reading this book, and think this paragraph really helps to distinguish UPF(NOVA) vs nutritional classification.

I am worried that a lot of the implied good vs bad will only be accessible to higher income households.

ChaoticMissAdventures I thought this was so well done. I think he addressed income issues at some point? I remember it being really constructive. 3mo
