Popovic was part of the movement (Otpor) that ousted Milosevic from power in Serbia, and this book is a handbook of sorts—taking principles from Otpor and discussing how those principles could be applied in a variety of contexts, using nonviolent activism and resistance to effect change. The wealth of examples he offers are inspiring and often hilarious. I can‘t help but wonder if the Portland Frog was inspired by this book… ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I read this with an online book group over the summer, and I‘m so glad I did. The final session was a discussion with the author—rich with relevant and practical ideas for our current context in the USA. 2d
JamieArc I read this years ago when it first came out and I think about it all the time. I think it‘s been the book I recommend most these days. I, too, thought of the connection between Portland and this book. I‘ve been hoping someone would get into some creative protest! 2d

There‘s a lot of talk these days about getting 3.5% of the population involved in a protest. But why? And how?
I‘m trying to learn more about how nonviolent resistant world and (why) 😉

The Trumpet of Conscience | Martin Luther King, Jr.

I got these about 10 years ago when I was visiting Atlanta, GA. While it could be depressing how relevant King's message still is today, his story is nonetheless inspiring, and many of his philosophies are still in practice today, whether intentionally or subconsciously.

I follow Lauren Grubaugh Thomas‘ Substack, A Soulful Revolution, and today‘s piece was hopeful and encouraging to me, as I feel somewhat at a loss over effective action in the face of current events. I‘ll link her piece below. She highlighted the tagged book and an upcoming series of online book discussions, if anyone‘s interested in joining in. I just put the book on hold at the library! TheBookHippie I‘ve been preaching this for decades . Yes we have to protest. No that‘s not enough. ✊🏼 wonderful article. Hopefully more people wake up. 3mo

p. 137: 'True peace is not merely the absence of some negative force - tension, confusion, or war; it is the presence of some positive force - justice, good will, and brotherhood.'
