💕🇺🇲🦅🇺🇸💝.

Always loved how the Eagle is an important symbol for both my American and American Indigenous roots.

The Thanksgiving Play | Larissa Fasthorse

Pickpick

The Thanksgiving Play is the best kind of satire-funny, smart, and biting. Taking shots at all-white school Thanksgiving plays, “woke” Americans, and the entertainment industry, this will become one I read every year. The second play, What Would Crazy Horse Do, was strange, surprising, and a bit upsetting. This is my first read of Fasthorse and ail quite bowled over by her skill and voice. #NativeReads #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

sarahbellum Thank you so much for posting about this play! I had never heard of it, but it sounded right up my alley, so I listened to it today on Hoopla and found it delightful. I hope you and your family had a great holiday! 2y

I loved Betty, so I was excited to read another of McDaniel‘s books. She takes another tragic tale with difficult subject matter (lots of trigger warnings which I‘ll list out in the comments) but uses such beautiful writing. It was a truly heartbreaking story on so many levels but I couldn‘t stop reading. Definitely a story that will stick with you. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #bookspin #litsylovereads

ncsufoxes Trigger warnings:suicide, racism, abuse, gruesome death of child 2y
AmyG I am the reverse. I just finished Betty. McDaniel is now a new favorite author. 2y

Impactful poems. Joy Harjo reflects on the historical events that affected her ancestors and the Native Americans; she also shares her experiences from her own life and family. So much loss, grief, injustice.

If I Ever Get Out of Here | Eric Gansworth

This is listed as middle grade and YA. Considering it‘s length and some of the subject matter, I‘d recommend for YA. I‘d also highly recommend this. It touches on being Native among a white majority, loneliness, bullying, military families, and is a tribute music, particularly the Beetles and Paul McCartney.

Follow Regina as her tribe is disbanded and she moves from Oregon to Los Angeles, trying to hold fast to her culture. As an adult, you will be angry at the lies told by the US govt to disband the Umpqua tribe in Oregon. As a child, you will learn some untaught US history and more. I would recommend this for classrooms.
