I love this: The Iliad, which I am pretty unfamiliar with, told from the perspective of Berseis: a Trojan princess who is captured and becomes the mistress of Achilles. I got swept up in the plot and the complexity of the characters, as well as the graphic portrayal of war and resistance of captured and enslaved women to gruelling abuse. I also loved how it alternated between first person and third person narration.

#mythologyretelling #booked2022 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae
This novel abt 2 sisters is a retelling of the ovid metamorphosis tale of iphis, a mother prays to the gods to hide her daughter from a husband who will her the child if it is not a boy. Touching on corporations who monetise water, environmental protest, and fluid sexuality this is told with Ali Smith's usual style that I love + was an interesting introduction the myth.

I loved this book. It may be my favorite of the year. This is the story of the legendary Achilles and his best friend/lover Patroclus. As with Circe it is beautifully written and you know it will lead you to tears but you will treasure every second of it 💙

This is my new favorite book of the year. It‘s an epic fantasy inspired by the Chinese myth of Chang‘e - the Moon Goddess, filled with princes, warriors, demons, love, betrayal, and quests. #Booked2022 #MythologyRetelling #AlmostAChunkster (512 pages) First book finished for #JubilantJuly @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage @TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65

Good family drama, enjoyed the read and the constant bad decision making. How can everyone be this dysfunctional 😁 ?
Loose #mythologyretelling #booked2022

Tamra 😜 I often wonder the same thing in real life. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen Definitely a loose retelling but I thought it as so well written - I can‘t wait to see what she writes next 3y
TrishB @Tamra very true 😁 3y
TrishB @Cinfhen I‘ll definitely read whatever she does next, very impressive debut. 3y

This is a soft pick for me; I liked it but it didn‘t wow me. Like you Caroline, I think there have been a few too many mythology retellings recently and this one does suffer from (my) comparisons with Madeline Miller and Pat Barker.

This one tells the women‘s perspective on the more famous stories of the Minotaur, Icarus (in passing) and Dionysus. It just felt a little bit simplistic and almost YA.

jhod Oh when are we supposed to be discussing it?! 3y
Oryx Agree Madeline Miller is leagues ahead in this game. 3y
rockpools …but it‘s SUCH a pretty cover! 3y

Caroline2 Funny we finished at the same time. Yes, strong YA vibes which doesn‘t always bother me but I have to be in the mood and I‘m way too grumpy at the mo!! 😆 3y
julesG @jhod Thursday next week. 3y
Cathythoughts It is a lovely cover 💙 3y
squirrelbrain It is pretty isn‘t it?! @rockpools @cathythoughts 3y
squirrelbrain It doesn‘t sound like you‘re the only grumpy one though, with regard to this book! 🤣 @Caroline2 3y
squirrelbrain Sorry @RaeLovesToRead - missed you off my tag list! 🙁😬 3y
Tamra So-so for me. I had really looked forward to this novel. I can‘t even remember why it was so-so, guess that says something! 3y
RaeLovesToRead Don't worry! 😊 3y
squirrelbrain It does say something doesn‘t it?! @Tamra I‘ve kind-of forgotten it already! 🤷‍♀️ 3y

What a drama-filled emotional ride of a book! I‘m a mythology nerd (especially Greek, though the author based characters on both Greek and Roman god and goddess names), and adore any sort of book (well-written of course) about a dysfunctional family. And WHAT family is more dysfunctional than the mythical immortal family of Olympus? Good stuff 🤓 Aaaaand I figured out who was who (mostly), so I‘ve fully solidified that I am still 100% nerd 😁😂

Branwen I loved this one! I was so excited when I figured out who each character was supposed to be! 😂👏 3y
CBee @Branwen me too! I made a list of each character and which god or goddess they represented! 😂😂🤓🤓 3y

I wasn‘t too far into this one when I told my husband I think this blurb may be 100% right and it was. Hades and Persephone have great chemistry🔥. I enjoyed the world that Robert created. The gods feel more like the mafia and they aren‘t really immortal. I know some readers said there isn‘t enough plot, but I enjoyed the development of the characters and was happy to hang out with H & P. I would say this is an erotic romance. There is ⬇️

Bookzombie a sex club and some kink. I look forward to picking up the new one in this series. 😈

I don‘t know how much of this matches the original myth of Hades and Persephone, but I‘m using it for #Booked2022 #mythologyretelling . Most of my mythology knowledge comes from Rick Riordan.

Reggie Sidenote- I‘ve been calling myself Persephone in my head at work because I‘m on loan to this department that can‘t keep employees and instead of fixing the problem which might be their manager it‘s getting people from other departments to help out. It started right at the beginning of winter and I feel like I won‘t get out until the spring. I only wish my Hades was some mafia hottie. Lol great review, Margie. 3y
Bookzombie Oh man, that really sucks. Is it still by the machine playing The Pointer sisters? We just had a lot of shuffling around on my team at work because some upper management screwed up. I didn‘t get moved, but it‘s a lot of adjusting. It‘s always the people not in management who suffer. Sorry, I‘m in a mood. I wish you had a hot Hades too. The one in the book was hard on the outside, but mushy on the inside. 🙂 3y

A #SwoonWorthy debut!!!! I LOVED this loosely mythological based novel about the Briscoe family of Olympus, Texas. Patriarch Peter(Zeus) has three grown children with his wife June (Hedra) & 3 more from 2 other women. When prodigal son March returns to town after a two year absence the fates & furies wreck havoc on this Godlike family. SO MUCH DRAMA!!! Completely captivated. My FAVORITE book so far from @MallenNC #NYWD list 🙌🏻❤️
