So, before we start our new reads with the #FellowshipOfTolkien l want to try and finish at least the Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings. With both books, I'm not so far from the end, so...

And soon, the #DraculaDaily will pick up again where l left off last year, and I'd like to finish that too.

It's disgracefully hot here in Italy. Let's see what l manage.

Here we are!!! 😁

@Daisey and l have been thinking what to read next with the #FellowshipOfTolkien.

There are a few option we'd like to explore.
Here is what we have come up with for a Fall reading.
1. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
2. The Fall of Numenor
3. Tolkien and the Great War

These are really three different path we might thread.
1. Tolkien's medieval work (so much to read!)
2. New publications
3. Books about Tolkien

What you fancy?😁

BookwormAHN I'm good with any of them 😺 4mo
Daisey I am happy to read any of these, but my first pick would be reread Sir Gawain, which is usually published with translations of The Pearl & Sir Orfeo, with the group followed by some other translations that have been out a while that I‘ve yet to read. 4mo
Desha I‘m interested in Tolkien and the Great War…I‘ve been wanting to read it for a long while! Thank you for organizing this read along!! 💗 4mo
Roary47 I‘m game for whatever. The first selection looks the most interesting. 4mo
BarbaraJean I‘d be interested in any of these! I‘m less interested in Sir Gawain, since I finally got around to reading it (along with The Pearl and Sir Orfeo) not that long ago, but it would also be hard to resist reading it with the group 😁 4mo
TheAromaofBooks This fall is looking crazy busy for me, but let me know what the group decides and I will see if I can work it in!! 4mo
JazzFeathers @Daisey It looks like Sir Gawain is taking the table 😂 3mo

Disappointed in this one. It‘s bound so beautifully and smells great, but for something that‘s labeled as an atlas and says it celebrates great artwork inspired by Tolkien without too much explanation in the preface, there‘s not a lot of artwork and a lot of words. Also a lot of dense family tree type charts and timelines. Would much rather recommend reading illustrated editions of the Silmarillion, Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings.

Post 1/2: When I read ”Of the Flight of the Noldor” now after reading the History of Middle-Earth (HoME), I always miss the actual inclusion of the oath of Fëanor and his sons. Reading the words feels so much more dramatic than only a narrative description. So, I‘m sharing two versions. This is the version from the tagged book.

JazzFeathers I agree. The Oath of Feanor is powerful. Also, l don't remember it nnwhich version it is, but l really miss the actual debate before the Oath is taken. I remember thinking, everybody is right, and everybody is wrong, and this is diabolic!!!!! 😱😂 9mo

#FellowshipOfTolkien

I did write a short blog to celebrate Tolkien's birthday. I'm late as usual, but here it is 😁

BethM His quote is Greta 11mo
JazzFeathers @BethM It is. The entire passage is so good actually. There are lines that echo what Tolkien write in the dialogue between Sam and Frodo in their pause from the climbing of Cirith Ungol and I fancy Tolkien was writing that part when also writing to Christopher away at war, his art and his life intertwining. 11mo

Here‘s the first in a set of 6 reading challenges I created for my library system. Each book is related to a fact about the author. As an extra challenge, discover the facts! #ReadingChallenge #ReadingChallenge2024

Sapphire Wow! Now that‘s a fun and novel way to do a challenge! 11mo
Sapphire Can‘t wait to see what the other challenges are! 11mo
Daisey This is fun! I had to look up a couple of the books that I didn‘t recognize, but I have an idea of the connections to Tolkien. #FellowshipOfTolkien (edited) 11mo

Like the first book of lost tales, it‘s a lot of extraneous explanation from Christopher Tolkien about his father‘s work. The last few stories were unfinished but a few did have full narratives. I liked a couple of them, but the Turambar tale was super messed up and violent. A lot of this is more fleshed out in the Silmarillion.

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this collection of tales. The tales themselves are unfinished, as they are drawn from Tolkien's notes and unpublished manuscripts. In some ways, they illustrate how unfinished The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings are. This book is full of supplemental stories to add more details and background to those stories. The Tale of the Children of Húrin is one of my favorite Tolkien stories. The illustrations are great.
