Amateur detective Wimsey‘s brother the Duke has been arrested for the murder of their sister‘s fiancée. The duke, the sister, the fiancée, some couples, the hired help are all at a hunting lodge when a gunshot is heard in the middle of the night. It turns out all the suspicious parties, including the deceased, have very big secrets. An excellent detailed investigation but I wasn‘t too pleased with the resolution. It felt contrived so the ⬇️

Texreader reader couldn‘t possibly figure it out ahead of time. Much better than book 1. But Wimsey still irritates me. The actual police detective I like very much. I‘m reading book 3 in the series now. I hope the stories continue to improve. #authoramonth @Soubhiville #serieslove @TheSpineView @Andrew65 4h

I am absolutely living these Lord Peter Whimsey books. They're so unexpectedly hilarious! I'm so glad this was a pick for #aam.

This was fine. It's entertaining. I heard that these get better, but I might stall here at three.

I am happy that #AuthorAMonth gave me an excuse to finally read this book that has been on my Kindle for probably more than a decade. However, I am not loving it as much as I expected. Is it just me?

inthegreensandblues I think I'm going to bail on this book too. I cannot get into it! 3d
Leniverse It's definitely one of the weaker ones. Sayers got better with practice. I suggest moving on to book 2 instead. Clouds of Witness. It has more of a drawing room feel to it. Everybody's gathered and someone gets murdered, and Lord Peter has to manage his family (as one of them is the main suspect) 3d
Soubhiville It seems a lot of folks don‘t love it. Mentions of some problematic mindsets indicative of the era it was written. But it‘s short so most people seem to be powering through it. 3d
dariazeoli What a relief that I‘m not alone on this ship. I didn‘t like it much, either! 2d
tpixie I‘m slugging along. ChatGPT says Gaudy Night is her masterpiece, but that maybe one should read Strong Poison 1st to better understand the development of Wimsey and Vane‘s relationship. 2d

Lord Peter Wimsey is definitely no Sherlock Holmes, despite his comment that he feels like Holmes as he works to solve the mystery. Thank god for audiobooks as I‘m not sure I would‘ve finished the book if I‘d read the physical text. I found that the flow of the book wasn‘t the greatest and the ending was quite abrupt. I may give the next book in the series a try just to see if the writing improves. #AuthorAMonth

Had a doctors appt today so decided to take a full “mental health” day from work, treat myself to brunch and a mani, and start in on my #AuthorAMonth pick on audio.

Peter Wimsey‘s gleeful singing about dead bodies & murder investigations is…something else. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

The second novel is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. A cozy mystery written in 1926. The story takes place in the countryside estate of Lord Peter‘s brother Gerald. Gerald is hunting with his soon to be brother-in-law. Lord Peter sees the headline saying his brother has been arrested and rushes to solve the crime. The humor of the English is ever present. This novel could be read as a standalone book or part of the series. 4/5.

Oh my! I hated this book so much. It was the longest 6 hours of my life at 1.75x speed. It was racist, it was a lot of talking and singing? It was a lot of just telling. So many characters and the narrator did not differentiate them at all.

I‘ll just stick with Agatha Christie.

tpixie I‘m reading their on my kindle & it‘s taking forever. I‘m not really liking it either. I‘ll probably switch to the audio to just get it over with. Or just skip to the last chapter,,, 6d
Texreader Excellent review! Spot on. “What?” 4d
Texreader @tpixie My version of the audiobook was not good either. Especially when she broke out in song. 4d

tpixie @Texreader lol 😂 🎶. I‘m about ready to get the audiobook just to get over the book. It seems I‘ve been at 30 or 35% for a whole week. Of course I‘m mostly sleeping at bedtime or in the middle of the night when I wake up so I‘m not getting a lot done. But I also have no motivation to read it during the day. 4d
Laughterhp @tpixie I started by reading this and was honestly falling asleep trying to read it. Listening to the audio helped me get through it but it was still rough. 4d
tpixie @Laughterhp thanks! Once I get done with my #LiteraryCrew I will switch to audio! 4d

Very much a soft pick for me. Overall I enjoyed it but it dragged at times and Wimsey sure does prattle on. I‘m not opposed to reading more in the series but it‘s definitely not a reading priority.

Andrew65 Well done 🥳🥳🥳 And yes the two reviews are almost identical. I agree about it dragging at times. 1w
