I'm always delighted to find literary references in Pop Culture! The robot only planet in Futurama named for the author of RUR is such a quiet, excellent nod to literature! #futurama #literaryreference #literaryallusion #popculture #robot #classicliterature #literaryclassic #classic

A Double Life | Karolina Pavlova

Pickpick

I enjoyed this 19th-century comedy of manners about the marriage market. Witty & bleakly humorous with an intriguing style. The prose & poetry sections depict young Cecily's "double life"—her corseted/cosseted real-life, interspersed with the verse that she writes alone at night when she feels free. The comparison to Jane Austen is inevitable, but the anger Pavlova feels about the condition of women is more readily felt in the writing. #netgalley

batsy Translated from Russian by Barbara Heldt, this also has the distinction of being a *short* Russian novel 😆 5y

So says a mother of her daughter of a marriageable age. 19th-century Russian aristocratic mothers give some of the Jane Austen mothers a run for their money!

(The truth about whether Cécile is "exactly what I wanted to make of her" is of course more complicated ?)

batsy @charl08 All of the mother's designs have fallen apart in spectacular fashion and I don't want to say that this is like a Russian Jane Austen, but it kind of is! 5y

For Day 6 of the #botmbookclubseptphotochallenge on Instagram, I give you a vintage read! Do you have any special old books? I mainly have vintage poetry books but I do have a few treasured childhood favorites and some interesting and rare Alice in Wonderland related books.

Pavlova originally wrote this Classic of Russian Literature ,1848,being published this year in the USA, and its premise is so perfect for the times we are living through. This is a work of wit and depth, originally written to show the duality of women in society and the mores of aristocratic society. This story will stay with you, the emotional range done precisely and masterfully. Herxwords are perfected crafted for this novel. It's fantastic

While this was an assigned book for my Eng Comp class it wasn‘t a terrible read. I did like learning the true origins of the creature and Frankenstein, and could relate to some parts as well.
Although some of the LENGTHY descriptions of the setting and the flowery language often times bored me.
