The Rest of the Robots | Isaac Asimov
post image

In his Introduction, Asimov makes the following inaccurate prediction about AI:

"If robots are so advanced that they can mimic the thought processes of human beings, then surely the nature of those thought processes will be designed by human engineers and built-in safeguard will be added."

Bookwomble That word "surely" reads poignantly. I guess Isaac didn't account for megalomaniacal billionaire tech-bros who would happily burn the world if there's a financial profit in it for them. 1d

I tend to read a lot of sci-fi, but 2024 seems to be a bumper year for it!

I read "I, Robot" earlier this year, so here I go with the follow up collection. ? v.2.0

The_Book_Ninja I need a re-read of that too. It‘s been so long 5h

A rather disturbing read for me, but one that really made me think. Annie is a ‘cuddle bunny‘ AI robot living with Doug, a 34 year old man who has issues with Annie becoming auto-didactic and therefore more human like.

The juxtaposition of the sex scenes and Doug‘s abuse of Annie was really uncomfortable and the book raised questions about what it is to be human and what constitutes abuse.

BarbaraBB That is a good question indeed. I felt less uncomfortable reading it but I‘ve had the same question after finishing it. 4d
Suet624 Hmmm… I‘ve been avoiding this one. Your review explains why. 4d

Read in 1 day! Quick, tense, techie, and manages to work in some very interesting and thought provoking relationship ponderings. Really enjoyed this and so nice to read a book so quickly again! 🙌🏼
🌟🌟🌟🌟

And with that, I‘m halfway done with #tenbeforetheend #10beforetheend 😅

Starting The Unraveling next….

#BookHaul for a good cause. My local library put out a call for new or gently used books for kids of all ages.

They partner with P.E.I. Literary Alliance to distribute them over the holidays across the province in Xmas Hampers. I haven‘t read any of these, but the descriptions sounded good and the price point was low enough that I could buy doubles for some. Gotta get books into as many middle school hands as possible.

CBee The Wild Robot series is excellent 🤖 ♥️ 2w
DogMomIrene @CBee Thank you for that feedback! I was trying to buy as many books as I could for about $100 and the books I knew were pricey. 2w
CBee @DogMomIrene of course! I loved it as much as my 12 year old did ♥️ 2w

AnnCrystal Don't know if all Dollars Tree stores stock books. One just opened in my neighborhood and they had, limited, yet a really interesting selection. All with a sticker price of around $2.

Example of what my local store had:

A good selection of Judy Blume (I didn't buy, not my usual genre).

A few books in the Creepers series (really want to collect more of those).

Young readers books for toddlers and little kids (found a Batman 🦇💝).

AnnCrystal P.S. maybe go with a friend, kinda lonely...at least my location was.

Also, there were a couple of individual guys walking around with mobiles, no baskets, and seemingly not buying anything?? They seemed to be observing people more than merchandise...actually, I'm noticing this more and more all around town.

Be safe 🙏💝.

DogMomIrene I had not considered the dollar stores. I‘m such a homebody. A homebody who walks her dogs to get out of the house on the regular. But we have one close by so I‘ll check them out. 2w
DogMomIrene @AnnCrystal I appreciate your concern. We live on Prince Edward Island, which is Canada‘s smallest province. We‘re in a safe area. We bought our house from a woman who never locked her doors. We chose to move to 🇨🇦 in part to be safer. I‘ve lived in several large US cities, so “Constant Vigilance” has always been a motto. I‘ve noticed a few things here that raise my level of concern, but are easily avoidable. We‘re really fortunate. Stay safe💜 (edited) 2w
AnnCrystal @DogMomIrene 😍that sounds whimsical 💝💝💝 ☺️👍📚💝. 2w
Nebklvr Those are great choices. 2w
DogMomIrene @Nebklvr Thank you! I scoured reviews, but hearing these are good from Littens makes me more confident that there will be some happy middle schoolers. 2w

I was finally able to fill one of the more difficult #52bookclub categories, “Author debut in second half of 2024.“ I've read a number of novels by Andrew Pyper, but this is his debut under the pseudonym Mason Coile.

This short novel is a spooky haunted house story featuring AI “monsters“. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other Pyper works I've read, but as it was set on Hallowe'en day, it was a good one to read this week.

What makes us human? is the question this novel tackles. Is the emotional abuse from a controlling 34-year old white man okay if it‘s directed at a robot? Annie‘s awakening was fascinating to read. I did wish there were more interactions with Monica. Would make a great pick for book club discussion. First book from #10BeforeTheEnd down.

#TenBeforeTheEnd

ChaoticMissAdventures I really enjoyed this one, it gives the reader a lot to think about and I really liked Annie. ✅ 3w
DogMomIrene @ChaoticMissAdventures Annie was incredibly relatable. I‘m glad I purchased this ebook on a whim and added it to my year end list. 3w

#weeklyfavorites

Adding Annie Bot after a short week in which I read little, completes October. These five are all so good but my favorite this month has been Prima Facie.

Annie makes some astute observations.
