Though music is a huge part of my life, this is my first #TuesdayTunes. I've been listening to a lot of Fontaines D.C. lately and I'm very excited to see them live for the second time in April.

#12Booksof2024 OCTOBER Having loved The Spinning Heart , I read this sequel ( which is a standalone too). It‘s equally as good. The first character we hear from is Bobby Mahon and Bobby might be one of my favorite characters ever. ❤️
Our Bookclub went to hear Donal Ryan reading from his book. He‘s sincere and great craic.

LeahBergen Oh! I was wondering how that went! I‘m glad it was a fun night out for the bookclub. 2mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen It was a great night. He‘s a scream, he had us in stitches. Lovely man ! 2mo
BarbaraBB Oow I am stacking 2mo

Cuilin I must really be homesick because the phrase great craic has me 🥹 2mo
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB 👍🏻❤️ 2mo
Cathythoughts @Cuilin Christmas and New Year can be trying when away from home ❤️ 2mo
andrew61 I read from a low and quiet sea when it was up for the booker and saw him then discussing the book at a local event. I really liked his writing so you have inspired me to find more of his books. 👍 2mo
squirrelbrain Good to hear that it can stand alone - I got the ARC before I knew it was a sequel and haven‘t read it yet. 2mo
Andrew65 Sounds well worth adding to the TBR. 2mo
Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain Yes, the same characters are back, but it works as a standalone. Donal Ryan said he wrote it because his mother worked in the local supermarket and people kept asking her what happened to Bobby.. She told him to write a follow up as it was driving her mad 😂 2mo
Cathythoughts @andrew61 I‘ve only read The Spinning Heart and this one, I must get more 😁. 2mo

I wish I hadn't waited so long to read this. What a delightful, old-fashioned country Christmas read. The author describes a Christmas from her childhood and all the exciting preparations involved, with all the magic and innocence that only a child at Christmas can bring. 🎄 ❄️

It‘s doesn‘t seem like Litsy have the entire title: “Missing Persons. Or: My grandmother‘s secrets”. It‘s also interesting that the Norwegian title has switched the sentences.

So what is this about?
In her 20s Wills is told about a cousin she never knew about. Apparently her uncle Jack fathered a child in the 50s. Since he and the mother didn‘t want to get married, the mother was sent off to a home to give birth.

How could her family accept

AnneCecilie this? And the woman‘s family? And what does it say about the 50s society? Wills looks at the social changes from the Great Famine and how that changed the society. Poor people dying or living for America, increasing the church power. She also looks at all the bureaucracy that was involved. This was an eyeopener. And in the process, Wills also discover that her grandma had some secrets 3mo

Suet624 @Cuilin Now I have to go look at Paul Henry‘s work 4mo
Cuilin @Suet624 he painted many scenes of the west coast of Ireland, early 1900‘s. 4mo
Suet624 @Cuilin oh my gosh. I just watched a beautiful video about his work. Thank you for telling me about him. 4mo
Cuilin @Suet624 you‘re welcome, I spent so much time in Achill growing up it that when it came time to pick an artist to study for my leaving, I chose Paul Henry. 4mo

We read The Spinning Heart years ago for Bookclub, and we are going to see Donal Ryan speak about this tagged new book of his on Wednesday next. I was afraid I wouldn‘t remember The Spinning H, as this is a companion, follow up book ( that can be read as a stand-alone too) But the characters came back to me ( mostly). This is a brilliant book. Great characters again. Love his writing.

Balibee146 I read The Queen of Dirt Island recently and it was very good 4mo
Cathythoughts @Balibee146 Oh great. I‘ve just stacked it. He‘s a fine writer. ♥️ 4mo
BarbaraBB Great review. I must check him again, I enjoyed his 4mo

Set in Ireland in 1994, The Coast Road follows two women coping with their unhappy marriages at a time when divorce is still illegal. Collette left her husband, but returned, and now her husband won‘t allow her access to her children and she lives in poverty. Izzy is frustrated and miserable, struggling to find autonomy within the confines of a marriage she cannot escape. Both are considering the high cost of personal freedom. An excellent debut.
