TheKidUpstairs
Lost on Me | Veronica Raimo

Pickpick

Witty, thoughtful, introspective coming of age story set in Italy. Vero is an unreliable narrator, viewing the world around her and the lives of her family, friends, and self with a level of detachment that adds humour and at times heart ache. She freely admits to adjusting reality to fit into a narrative that proves more interesting for herself, and the result is a delightful, quick read where not much happens but it doesn't really matter.

TheKidUpstairs “And that's how I've felt at every moment of my life: Oh whatever. Let's just say this is me.“

“It was the first real goodbye in my life. To be perfectly honest, I'd been building up to that moment in my mind since the day we started going out. In fact, I think that was exactly why I'd started dating him in the first place: so we could leave each other. The thought that he'd be leaving the country soon ensured me a misery I could enjoy without the hassle of having to go out and find one myself.“

TheKidUpstairs I'm loving the narrative voice in this one from the #InternationalBooker Longlist 1w
Chelsea.Poole Striking cover too! 1w
TheKidUpstairs @Chelsea.Poole yes! I was totally grabbed by the cover on hoopla, so simple yet so intriguing. 1w

This is my first book from the #InternationalBooker longlist. It is a Dutch one so an easy one for me to purchase and read. It‘s a book about a brother and sister, identical twins. He commits suicide in his thirties. This is no spoiler, the book is about how, despite their closeness, she can‘t protect him from his depression, he can‘t protect her from missing him. It is a sad book, written lightly, which adds to the impact.

#ATY24 Title 6+ words

squirrelbrain Sounds really good! 2mo
Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻♥️ 2mo
Suet624 Gah! I definitely couldn‘t read this one, considering I have twins who adore each other. 1mo

#WeeklyForecast 14/24

I am about to finish Soldier Sailor and have lined up three more books for this week because I‘ll have a long Easter weekend off work. I am looking forward to all three of these. Alex Finlay never disappoints, a J Robert Lennon is always a treat and the Dutch one (tagged) is from the #InternationalBooker longlist. If I‘ll finish them all I have more #womenprize books to choose from 😀

Megabooks J Robert Lennon was tagged as this author's mentor in the acknowledgements. I haven't written a review yet, but I loved this choice from last year's camp litsy longlist. 2mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks That is quite a recommendation: both you and Lennon. I‘ll stack immediately! 2mo
squirrelbrain Have a great week! 2mo

BarbaraBB @Megabooks I am starting the Lennon and he thanks Ann Patchett in his acknowledgements. Wow 🥰 2mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Thanks Helen. You too. Are you back from camping? 2mo
MaCa I'd love to hear your take on Kilroy! 2mo
squirrelbrain Yes, we‘re back….and back to work with a vengeance! 😬 2mo
BarbaraBB @MaCa I just finished it. Will post my review soon! 2mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain But you will be free for Easter I think? 2mo

There‘s currently a kindle deal on this book (set in Naples during WWII) if anyone is interested? It‘s on the International Booker Prize longlist even though I said I wasn‘t going to look at any more longlists and I certainly wasn‘t going to buy any more. 🤦‍♀️ 😂 #internationalbooker

BarbaraBB I bought this one too, I loved his earlier book 2mo

The #internationalbooker longlist has been announced today. I only read two so far, Kairos and The Details.
I feel a bit overwhelmed (not to say stressed) about all the books I want to read, with #LitsyToB24 and the #womenprize calling for my attention too!

Oh and my fulltime job 😂

Any recommendations of this longlist are very welcome!

TheKidUpstairs I, too, am feeling the overwhelm! I haven't read any of these but I'm very interested in The House on Via Gemito, because I've enjoyed Starnone's writing in the past. 2mo
BarbaraBB @TheKidUpstairs That‘s one I‘ll definitely read too for similar reasons. And there‘s a Dutch one among them which I hadn‘t heard of but will read soon too. 2mo
BookWrym Looking to attempt reading some of these at least. Have requested what I can from the Library let‘s see what turns up and how it goes. For some reason Crooked Plow is calling to me I have no idea why. (edited) 2mo

Bookwormjillk If only someone would pay us to read 2mo
BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk If only 😉 2mo
BarbaraBB @BookWrym that one appeals to me too! 2mo
Hooked_on_books Well, you could always quit the job and just read. 😉 2mo
vlwelser I'm going to forget I saw this and keep working on all of the other lists. 2mo
BarbaraBB @vlwelser 😂😂 2mo
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Imagine 😍😍 2mo
Ruthiella Read only the short ones! 😆 2mo
Graywacke Also overwhelmed. I want to read them all, and I can‘t decide on just one to start with. 2mo
BarbaraBB @Graywacke Have you read any? 2mo
Graywacke @BarbaraBB no. All new to me. 2mo
sarahbarnes I know, that pesky job! 😂 I‘ve only read Kairos and have a copy of Crooked Plow. I‘m interested in many of these, too. Would you recommend The Details? 2mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes Not really to be honest. I am curious about Crooked Plow. I hope you‘ll read it soon so I can decide whether to read it 😉 2mo
sarahbarnes I think I‘m going to read it next since I have it! 😊 I just finished Hard Girls last night. I wanted to like it much more than I did. 2mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes Me too!! I had so looked forward to it, him being J Robert Lennon, but it turned out to be nothing special! 2mo
TheKidUpstairs Now that I've had time to look into them further, these are the ones going on my TBR: The House on Via Gemito, White Nights, Crooked Plow, The Silver Bone, Lost on Me. Only The Silver Bone is available from my local libraries right now, so I'll start there and see which (if any) I can get to! But I've got so many Women's Prize ones piled up at home, and The Postcard has derailed all my reading plans - I can't put it down! 2mo
Readerann 😩 📚 📚 📚 📚 2mo
BarbaraBB @TheKidUpstairs Thanks so much for sharing your ideas. That means a lot. I still need to do my research 😀. The Postcard is fantastic and the WP longlist too - so far! 2mo
Suet624 I‘m exceedingly overwhelmed. Giving myself a break as I am dealing with shingles and post election data work. 2mo

Boulder | Eva Baltasar

Pickpick

#InternationalBooker list, though I don‘t typically read those titles, I am amazed at this slim character study!! Boulder is a woman who is more comfortable at sea, physically exhausted than contained in domesticity. She falls in love which changes her whole world. Then motherhood hits and everything changes. The way new motherhood is described from the non-birthing partner‘s perspective is phenomenal.

bnp Tempting. 9mo
Dilara @bnp I agree! 9mo

I had no idea what I was getting into when starting this book about 4 people living in an isolated French hamlet, each preparing the birthday of one of them in their own way.
But then two visitors arrive and the novel turns dark and tense. So well written, page-turning even, yet I didn‘t want to get to the end and find out how that would be. I will be thinking of this for a while! Thanks for the encouragement Sarah!

Cinfhen So glad it picked up! Maybe I should try again too 🤷🏼‍♀️❤️ 10mo
Leniverse I really need to find the time for this one! I've been looking forward to reading it for a while, it's just that there's always another book to read first 😅 10mo
BarbaraBB @Leniverse I know and it took me quite some time to read it. So sense. But worth it I think! @Cinfhen 10mo

batsy Glad that you liked it! Hope to get to it sooner rather than later 😅 10mo
BarbaraBB @batsy I did. It‘s your kind of book too! I hope you‘ll be able to read it soon! 10mo
squirrelbrain I tried this on holiday and couldn‘t get past the first couple of pages - sounds like I should try again. 🤔 10mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain It‘s not really a holiday read indeed but I‘d give it another try if I were you! 10mo
sarahbarnes Ahh, I‘m so glad you ended up liking it too! Great description - I felt the same way reading it. 10mo
Suet624 Hmmm… okay, I‘ll bite. 10mo

Tomorrow the winner of the #InternationalBooker Prize will be announced. I am wrong about the outcome no doubt, but this is the shortlist in the order I liked them best!
Number 1 to 4 I really liked, number 5 started out strong but didn‘t hold up, number 6 was not for me.

rockpools Oh interesting! I would move Boulder down to 4 or 5 (!) but otherwise agree with your order! 12mo
BarbaraBB @rockpools That is interesting. I loved Boulder but it was definitely the right book at the right time. Still Born was very good too! 12mo
Tamra I really want to read Boulder and Still Born! 12mo

batsy Oh wow, time has really flown. Looking forward to seeing the winner and slowly making my way through most of the longlist! 12mo
BarbaraBB @batsy Which is your favorite so far? 12mo
batsy @BarbaraBB I haven't read any! Only one from the longlist 😂 I had such grand plans this year... Lol but I loved the one I did read and am still sad it didn't make the shortlist (Is Mother Dead) 12mo
Cinfhen Well done!!!! Can‘t believe you read all 6 🙌🏻 12mo
BarbaraBB @batsy That‘s one I‘ve been meaning to read too 12mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I suddenly was on a mission 😂 12mo
