Pickpick

There is a lot of detail- approx 1/3 of the pages are footnotes- in this accounting of a 500 year old crime. It is well researched & I was impressed at how much documentation survives. It starts out by following the Provost of Paris who did some fine detective work w/i the technological limits of his time. We also get a fascinating look at French politics of the time- and there are unfortunate parallels to be drawn. Once the murder is solved the

bookandbedandtea book goes on to examine the repercussions of the murder as it leads to a civil war, which weakens French defenses and resources such that they cannot fend off the English king Henry V when he comes campaigning in France. He wins at Agincourt, despite the odds, and comes out ahead in the Hundred Years War, which the author posits may have turned out differently had not the Orleanists and the Burgundians been at each other's throats. 3w

I started Guy Gavriel Kay‘s latest this morning. It took me a little while to sink into it, but I‘m there now! I hope I can get some more time with it on this dull, rainy evening.

Casey‘s happy because he enjoyed extensive snuggles during reading time, then found a nice floor to nap on.

I‘m so close to the end of my Kobo project that I‘ve taken all my library holds off suspension! My plan is to alternate between my ebooks and this lot for the next while.

Once I had my holds in hand, I also grabbed a collection of Indian food legends with recipes off the New Stuff display. I never can resist a tiny, beautiful book about food.

ferskner I'm so curious about that Indian food book! 3mo
xicanti @ferskner I read the first story tonight and it was lovely! The recipe that accompanied it sounds really good, too. 3mo

Azincourt | Bernard Cornwell

Pickpick

I've always loved Cornwell's battle scenes, and in this book, they really get center stage. The brutal reality of medieval warfare may even be a more important character than any of the named individuals. How armies were built up, how they travelled, what a siege and a battle looked, felt, and smelled like are described in detail, as is some of the aftermath.
⬇️

eeclayton ➡️ One could say that the characters are a bit clichéd, their stories somewhat predictable, and I won't argue with this. However, for me, the warfare aspects more than made up for a weaker plot. 5mo
Ruthiella I think he really makes history come alive in his depictions of politics and battles. 5mo

An interesting and informative biography of Joan of Arc. I started reading this when my family was vacationing in Rouen, France, where her trial and execution took place. The Joan of Arc museum there is well worth visiting.

This is my first time doing a Reading Bracket. It's harder than I thought to get the pic of the book just right. Anyway, Henry V was by far my favorite of January. I always learn new things when I read a Dan Jones book.

BethM That was so freaking hard for me that I printed it and wrote my answers in each month 😂 doing the same thing this time 🙃 10mo
RamsFan1963 @BethM I might switch to that method, I'll see how it goes 10mo
Meshell1313 Ooh I can‘t wait to read that one! I recommend PicCollage app for the perfect alignment! ❤️ 10mo

I finished this audio history book a few days ago. Dan Jones writes the most lively books! This one completes his Medieval English history trilogy and connects The Plantagenets and The Wars of the Roses. I wish Dan Jones narrated more books because he‘s so engaging to listen to! Highly recommend!!

RamsFan1963 Yes I enjoyed Jones narration of Henry V more than I've liked John Curless's narration on The War of The Roses. 11mo
bibliothecarivs I recently found a like-new hardback copy of Henry V for only $5 at a local charity shop! I really enjoyed Jones' Summer of Blood (paperback) and Plantagenets (audiobook), although the narration of the latter by Clive Chafer was boring. 11mo
