An adorable sci-fi take on A Visit from St Nicholas, aka the 'Twas the night before Christmas' poem. Itty bitty short story that falls between the first and second book in the series. Just the thing for a cozy Christmas Eve read. ☺️ [Would post as separate review if Litsy has a listing for it.🙎🏼‍♂️]

I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!
The silliness and the warmth, that compassionate, gently teaching vibe. Similar to Becky Chambers in that sometimes it takes the author speaking through alien species to remind humans there are more accepting, kinder ways to act towards yourself and others. Main character is ace and agender, also disability rep with asthma and allergies, and some of the early medical discussion 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? makes me think maybe an autoimmune condition? The conversation about gender/sex/pronouns, the lonely robot's remarks on programming, basically everyone's assertion on not apologizing for what your body needs, for asking when you need help, for expressing specific wants rather than accepting endless disappointment in the effort not to upset others. 4w
Robotswithpersonality 3/? And then there's the linguistic fun: a translation/AI that has literal or figurative mode, the gobbledygook of alien space tech being filled in by well known pop culture sci fi jargon, the unswearing robot managing to creatively get her(?) point across without curse words in a flurry of syllabically matched sound-alikes. 4w
Robotswithpersonality 4/? The sheer imagination on display in the different species encountered, and how some of the more practical matters of finding oneself on an alien ship might play out. And the marvelously true-feeling experience of Spock the dog given voice. Oh, yes, I am overjoyed this is a series and will be continuing ASAP. 4w

Robotswithpersonality 5/5 Just saw the author described as writing 'sci-fi without the pew-pew'; while there are a couple of action-heavy moments in this book, the overall 'not about a space war' vibe is one I can get behind. Kay Eluvian's narration is flawless and the audiobook production is splendid. 4w
Singout Ace agender disability expressing needs Algonquin Park = +; not available in audio in my library = 😞 4w
Robotswithpersonality @Singout NOOOooooo! Oh that blows, sorry to hear it! Weirdness on my end, it wasn't available through my Libby (primary library audiobook) app but via Hoopla library subscription - any chance you've got a similar disconnected subscription option on your end? 4w
TieDyeDude This sounds amazing! Always on the lookout for ace rep, and can't go wrong with Becky Chambers-vibes 😁 Stacked. 4w
Robotswithpersonality @TieDyeDude Wish you much enjoyment! 4w

“Check out your floopy, floppy ears! How adorable are you!“

What do you say upon first contact with the (rainbow pastel, dog-sized) rabbit-looking aliens. 🤦🏼‍♂️[6 minutes into this audiobook, already in love. ] 😆

Bailedbailed

It's a bail but I'm not mad at it. I think it is a very well executed cross between Bridget Jones Diary and Dexter. If you are in the mood for graphically violent female rage then I would defo try it. Lots of respect for Skuse as a writer.

But you know I recently unsubbed from Netflix because I felt it was funnelling serial killer content into my head. And this is a bit murderporny, just enough to cross a personal line.

Bone In The Throat | Anthony Bourdain

Mehso-so

So Bourdain‘s fiction is straight mid except for his short story collection (tagged below) that I read last month and gave 4.25⭐️. That said, if you‘re a big fan (or a completist 🙋🏻‍♀️), it‘s worth a read. There are fun Easter eggs of places he discusses in his later memoirs. It is so strange that he always has to write himself into books even if it makes little sense to the plot. (A junkie chef in this one.) There were long scenes ⬇️

Megabooks Of the chef scoring heroin in bombed out LES buildings and then going to the methadone clinic. All Bourdain‘s real life. The book is ostensibly about a young son of a mob hustler who just wants to be a chef and how he‘s still tangled up in that life. The short story collection if you want to read (imo) the best of his fiction ➡️ 2mo
BarbaraBB I didn‘t know he wrote fiction! 2mo
TheBookHippie I liked the short story collection. 2mo

Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes, gangster-y crime fiction. Plus a few graphic novels. 2mo
Megabooks @TheBookHippie it‘s definitely the best of his fiction. He wrote it after the success of KC so I wonder if he had a better editor or maybe just understood his own voice better. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
TheBookHippie @Megabooks probably . 2mo

I know this looks very bad… and in some ways it very much was 😅 I would not consider this a guide for those who are actively grieving. The author is a comedian and this book is VERY tongue in cheek throughout its‘ entirety. The author herself even admits the advice given is terrible and sometimes even illegal. However… everyone grieves in their own way and this was the way this person went through her fathers death of cancer. No judgements here.

I normally do not like to compare new books to classics, but this is a great read if you are a fan of Hitchhikers Guide. Lem is kidnapped with her dog by bounty hunting alien bunnies. She meets others kidnapped by the bunnies and they try to survive together - making friends along the way of course! The book is a bit over the top, but I found it funny and lots of fun. I have been missing Becky Chambers book and thus was a crazier substitute.
