Wounded: A Novel | Percival Everett

Pickpick

Percival Everett really is a must read.

Wounded is a modern western about John, a black horse trainer who lives with his uncle in Wyoming. He is tolerated but when a gay man is brutally murdered the atmosphere in town turns grimly. John cannot ignore it. In the mean time his life gets busy with guests on his farm, animals and love.
And all his characters are so fabulous again. I am saying it again: I love Everett!

BarbaraBB @Christine Thank you 💕 7d
Suet624 This sounds just up my alley. A horse trainer, a farm, animals, love. Come on, Percival! 7d
BarbaraBB @Suet624 It‘s an oldie (2005) so I guess one of your libraries must have a copy waiting for you! 7d
Suet624 Well, believe it or not, none of them have it. I just ordered a copy from Blackwells. 7d

#WeeklyForecast 05/25

On this lazy Sunday I started The Family Experiment, John Marrs‘s most recent book. Next will be one from another author whose backlist I am making my way through. I came upon this cheap edition of this Percival Everett so had no choice but to buy it.
Bury Your Gays is another one from the #ToB25Longlist which is excellent this year.

TrishB Enjoy 😁 2w
squirrelbrain I hope you like Bury Your Gays! 🤞 Well, I hope you like all of them - you know what I mean! 🤪 2w

Another gem found in a neighborhood #LittleFreeLibrary ! I‘d never even heard of this one, but if Everett writes it I will read it. Grateful today to be outside in the currently fresh air in San Diego, even as I‘m feeling so much sadness for our northern neighbors, including some good friends who lost family homes. 💔

AmyG Devastating 😞 4w
Butterfinger I'm so sorry. It is all so sad. 4w
Hooked_on_books I completely agree about PE. I‘ll read anything he writes. 4w

ImperfectCJ I can relate to the simultaneous gratitude and sadness. Family back east keep asking if we're okay in San Diego, and when I say we are and that our college kid is safe at school so far, too, I feel it acutely, almost a guilt at feeling grateful to be safe (so far) when such destruction is happening only a couple of hours away. And of course knowing that our safety is contingent on something as capricious as wind patterns. 4w
BkClubCare I found this book last year and because it was PE I took it home. Thought it was great. Our hearts go out to all with threats of 🔥- very sad in so many ways. 4w
sarahbarnes I‘ve never heard of this one by him either - what a find! So terrifying what is happening. 💔 My daughter is just south of LA. 4w
monalyisha I always have trouble remembering where Littens are and keeping in mind the little details that make up their lives. It‘s part of why I love #AuldLangSpine. It brings a particular person into focus. I‘m sorry that I‘m learning *now* that you‘re in California, that I didn‘t reach out sooner, and that the details that make up your life are actually quite big right now. Sending love. 💗 Hoping against hope for increased climate justice. 4w
Christine @AmyG @Butterfinger So heartbreaking and beyond overwhelming for those affected. 3w
Christine @Hooked_on_books I feel lucky to have only read three of his so far! So much goodness to come. 3w
Christine @ImperfectCJ Well said. So concerned about what the next few days will bring. 3w
Christine @BkClubCare How fun that you found this one too and even better that you enjoyed! And yes, so much sadness and the enduring uncertainty is so hard. 3w
Christine @sarahbarnes Feels like an embarrassment of yet-to-be-discovered riches when it comes to Everett! And sending good wishes to your daughter, hope all are able to escape further disaster over the next few days. 3w
Christine @monalyisha It's so hard to keep track of where everyone is (region or country! :)! And I love that perspective re: #AuldLangSpine ! So true. We're so far unaffected in San Diego, though inland areas have warnings re: this next round of winds that's arriving. And yes, climate justice is so needed. We are all at risk wherever we live. 😔 3w

Mx. Justin Vivian Bond is one of the recipients of the 2024 MacArthur Fellowship (i.e. Genius Grant). I first became aware of Bond from the movie Shortbus. The song is slightly NSFW (suggestive lyrics). The movie is extremely NSFW, but beautiful.

Author and Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley looks at both the development of the Civil Rights movement in America and the weird world of DC comics continuity through the eyes of some of DC‘s Black, Asian, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ heroes.

By writing masterfully from the viewpoints of 6 different characters (nailing their individual voices) from the 1970s to 2010, Ridley deepens the DCU in gripping and thoughtful ways.

TieDyeDude Good review! I was thoroughly impressed by this book. 4mo

I‘ve read a lot of “my life got derailed and now I‘m going to open a bookstore” novels, but so far this is the only one that looks anything like my experiences working in a bookstore.

This is an epic retelling of events in the DCU from the perspective of non-white characters. We witness the ups and downs of hero life narrated by Black Lightning (and family), Katana and Renee Montoya. This is a really amazing tale, my only complaint is the format. Illustrations floating around the page linked together by big chunks of text. I feel like the layouts could have been handled much better, but the great storytelling shines though.

TieDyeDude Agreed. I thought this was more of an illustrated novel than a graphic novel; images supporting text rather than progressing the story. Tells an amazing story, though 6mo

My low expectations going in (based on another book by the same author) were not warranted. I was advised to give this book a try and I'm glad I did. This fake dating story in which a dare turns into a genuine connection is adorable and heartfelt while also touching on some tough family topics. I enjoyed this quite a bit. Also, loving the maybe demisexual/romantic rep. #LGBTQIA #FakeDating
