The Catcher in the Rye | J. D. Salinger

Day 9: A book you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving

Read this in high school in place of the Kite Runner (was given the option in class). It's a little dry, but Holden's asshole sense of humor kept my attention. Haven't read it in a while but might try to get through a second attempt. #thecatcherintherye #jdsalinger #holdencaulfield

"God, I wish you could've been there." #HoldenCaulfield

I enjoyed the hell out this #reread. I didn't write a review when I first read this about 6-7 years ago and I'm not going to now. We all know it's polarizing. You either identify with Caulfield or you don't. I have a son named Holden so I think you know where I stand. ☺️

vivastory I was a lot more affected by this when I reread it. I think it's one of those that you appreciate more after adolescence. 7y
britt_brooke @vivastory Agree. And even though I was in my late twenties when I first read it, I was even more affected by it this time around. 7y
Tamra We have excellent taste in names and characters. 👌🏾 7y

Marchpane Hmmm... now I'm considering rereading this. Hated it the first time but I was 16 then 🤔 7y
britt_brooke @Marchpane I hope you will! You might still hate it, but maybe not. 🤞🏻😉 7y
Marchpane @britt_brooke I'm hoping I've matured enough to appreciate it properly 😂 7y
vivastory @Marchpane If you reread it & still hate it, I'll have to unfollow you. No pressure...😜 7y
Leelee.reads I never get tired of Holden. 7y

Cathythoughts A son named Holden , that does indicate where you stand ! What a great name. Must read Catcher in the Rye💫 7y

Marchpane @vivastory 😳🤣 7y
OrangeMooseReads That pin is awesome, I need to get one. I find that I love this book more each time I read it. Holden feels more understandable the older I get. 7y
minkyb 😍 7y
britt_brooke @OrangeMooseReads I've only read it twice, but I know what you mean. I started rereading Franny and Zooey this morning. 💚 (edited) 7y

Depressing, but accurate. #HoldenCaulfield

RealBooks4ever I don't get why people do this anyway! What does it accomplish? It mars a wall and sends out negative energy! There's no thrill in writing the F word - its even in titles of books now! 😠 7y

I love the line "Mothers are all slightly insane." Best words ever. Because it's true. #momlife I also happen to like the line a few before that says "That guy Morrow was about as sensitive as a goddamn toilet seat." So. Awesome. If you really want to know, Salinger was never about writing cliches. He was a genius at coming up with never-heard-of analogies. #jdsalinger #thecatcherintherye #amreading #holdencaulfield
