My two mother‘s day books from my son. He is also going to do a lot of trimming in the yard, & weeding & planting in my garden. For someone who does not like to dig in dirt, it‘s an amazing & touching gift! Just saw my surgeon & as I guessed, I cannot do any kind of garden work due to my shoulder & bicep tear surgery last fall. Any sadness I was feeling after my MD appointment Friday has faded with this gift.

I always find poetry in translation difficult. When a poem doesn‘t work for me, is it the poet or the translator at work? I found most of these good, but none of them great.

First book of 2024 done.

A collection of shorts. I enjoyed the first the most - Augustus. A little bit of sci fi here, and being Hesse his hope & struggle with humanity is evident although not so misanthropic.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing felt poetic throughout but still personal and engaging. It was a melancholy mood, and I loved that the main character was a composer and most of the characters were musicians so there was a lot about his connection to music. It‘s billed as “a soul-searching novel of creativity and romantic love.” Not so much on the romantic love but love plays a big part. Tragic ending for one of the characters.

Not my favourite Hesse, but still a pick because of... Hermann Hesse. What else can I say? I love his way of writing, even though I prefer his books with more insights into the human psyche. You'll find this here as well, but it felt, like he focuses more on the portraits of nature here.

Hi everyone! Just checking in to let you all know I‘m still around. This teaching course has got me working til about midnight every day and I‘ve barely read anything at all, I had no idea it would be this hard if I‘m honest. I get some time off at the weekends but... blimey

The simplicity and efficiency of Hesse‘s prose make for a beautiful reading experience. This is a great one to start with if you are unfamiliar with his work and at only 156pp short and to the point.
