I far preferred the audiobook for this one. Rubenhold did a wonderful job of humanising these women, as well as addressing the importance of Not forgetting them amidst the infamy of their killer. It is sad just how much of the views of these women in their day are making a come back today. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics This is definitely worth a read, and I would like to see more authors who claim to be trying to discover Jack the Ripper‘s identity do a better job of discussing his victims as opposed to copping out and calling them prostitutes. 7d

I don‘t dislike this book despite having a few tiny issues with it. It‘s just that I‘ve been on the title page for the second victim for more than a month now. I‘m not sure what it is, but I am officially moving this book to the back burner. I‘m sure I‘ll return to it at some point, but that time is just not anytime in the near-ish future.

Funny, Michelle Dugger once said something very similar once. “Anyone can make him [Jim Bob] a sandwich. Any of the girls could do that for him. At the end of the day, only I can take care of his personal needs.” Basically she‘s openly saying she‘s only good for sex. 🙄 No wonder they‘ve got 19 kids.

On a more academic note, for a work that is meant to give humanity to women, to show that Victorian females were people too, why give exact dates for all of Polly‘s sons and then breeze past her daughter with just a month reference? Is she giving humanity to females or not?

GondorGirl Maybe there isn't a known date? That happened a lot in the 1800s, especially with girl babies. That doesn't make it any less irritating, but it might give reason. 6y

GingerAntics @GondorGirl I certainly thought of that. There easily could have been other records that would have given clues, though. If we‘re going by the lack of records because she was a girl, how do we know for sure it was December or even that year? It would all be guesses. If the information isn‘t available, then at least say that since the whole aim, supposedly, is to humanise females. 6y

Okay are we writing a history or a romance? This annoys me to no end. This would not happen in a history written by a man and it‘s not accepted in a work taken as a serious history. Again, as a female historian, I‘m seeing damage to my own future in this use of casual, cutesy language.

This is the second time she‘s chosen to use a word that doesn‘t seem to fit with the tone of the rest of her work. 6y

GingerAntics @tournevis I‘m not sure if she‘s trying to be cute or reach an audience beyond historians or what, but it‘s annoying, at least mildly obnoxious, and this is exactly what men point to when they say that women have no place in the history field. Like I said, it‘s stuff like this that hurts the rest of us (female historians). 6y

tournevis @GingerAntics We'll have to disagree on this, I think, one woman historian to another (well, historical anthropolist, me). It's not that simple. The field of academic history needs to, among other things, be pushed off its high horse of (male-centered) standards that separate academic writing from just as good and precise but accessible writing. I have "eminent colleagues" who pride themselves on being inaccessible. They are in the wrong. Not us. 6y

My issue with this word is that I feels thrown in to make it “accessible” but it doesn‘t actually match with the rest of the word choices. It feels forced. I‘m all about accessible and people (generally men) who feel the need to be as inaccessible as possible need to evolve or go. 6y

GingerAntics @turnevis Accessibility isn‘t throwing a word in every now and then just to do it, just because you can, when it doesn‘t fit with the tone of the rest of your writing. It just pulls the reader out of the writing and draws attention to that one word. THAT is my issue with this word. This book is accessible without this word. It detracts from her writing instead of adding anything. 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I looked at the photos of the victims (mostly at the mortuary, but some others at the scene) and all but Mary Jane (who was so mutilated you couldn‘t tell), every woman looks like she could be asleep, because she was clearly attached while she was asleep. The same thing is true for all the Whitechapel Murders. 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl Even Catherine Eddowes whose loser face was mutilated. If you look at the upper half of her face (if you covered the mutilated part) she looks like she‘s sleeping. These women were obviously killed in their sleep. Even the fact that Elizabeth Stride still had her breath mints in her hand, she fell asleep with them in her hand. How is this so confusing to all the men who investigated these killings? They all look peacefully asleep. (edited) 6y
