This was much more violent than the usual cozy mysteries we read for our work book club, but it wasn‘t bad. It‘s frigid here this weekend so good timing for reading about Greenland.

3 5⭐️ books for May with 3 others rounded up.

Marsons was not surprising as the Kim Stone series is consistently excellent. I‘m picking the tagged book as my favorite though…quirky, sentimental and deeper than I expected. A very nice surprise!

This was great! I know the "current" chapters were necessary but the historical parts of the story were absolutely riveting.

Adventurous. I can‘t think of any other words to describe this amazing autobiographical story that transports you from tropical Togo to the endless night of Greenland. 7/10

This was a bit out there. A mix of horror and fantasy trying to pretend like it's sci fi. A scientist in Greenland unfreezes a young girl who turns out to be alive and ancient. They need to learn her language to uncover her secrets. It was entertaining for a couple of hours.

Sace Reminds me of this one that‘s been sitting on my shelf forever. 10mo
vlwelser @Sace I guess I knew this was a theme but it comes across as comical. I would probably also read that if I tripped on it. 10mo

I'm currently in CPH waiting for a flight and I don't think this book is leaving DK.

I loved this book…wonderful sense of place (Greenland and France), complex and lovely characters, and an interesting and engaging storyline. Centers around Ilse, a translator who lives in Greenland but is overjoyed by a trip to France to meet a famous poet, Po, and translate his poems. She falls for France and the charming aging Po as well. But will she also fall for his charismatic son or is the pull of her home, friends and family stronger? ⬇️

robinb Lots of lyrical writing that was a pleasure to read, and Ilse was such a joy to follow. I could easily feel and share in her love for both her homeland and her first experience of France.
Highly recommended. 5/5⭐️

This is a non-fiction story about a woman and her husband who spend their spare time rowing/kayaking in the high latitudes near the arctic circle. In their day jobs they are avalanche experts in Alaska. Some really interesting information about kayaking and avalanches. I can say without a doubt that while her experiences sound fascinating, I would not want to trade places and row for 10 hours straight in icy water.

This was my December Double #BookSpin, but I‘m going to have to pick this one up another time. I don‘t want to mark it as DNF. I don‘t wanna ruin its stats. It‘s definitely me, not the book. Happy New Year, everyone! Happy Reading in 2024! Thank you for hosting again, Sarah!

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Sometimes it's just not the right time for a book!! 1y
