It is only 4 o‘clock; but it is winter and the sun has already set: there are no clouds in the clear, frosty sky, to reflect it slant beams, but the air itself is tinged with a slight roseate color which is again reflected on the snow that covers the ground. I live in a lone cottage on a solitary, wide heath: no voice of life, reaches me.
There‘s much that annoyed me but I can‘t deny the writing is exquisite. #funsizefiction

Cuilin This much debated novella is basically a first draft. After her father confiscated MWS‘s manuscript, it took another 100 years for it to be published. The subject of incestual desire though shocking, the idea that it was somehow autobiographical makes for an interesting read. I found it to be a self indulgent and overwrought, melodrama . It needed editing, but the writing oh my gosh so beautiful. 2y

The New Confessions | William Boyd

#TemptingTitles #withnew
Some “new” novels. The New Confessions I enjoyed. I recommend The New Life. I don‘t think I ever finished the Ferrante series. 🤔

Eggs Great choices! Great covers! 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures Is this William Boyd one about Louise Brooks or just the cover art one of her photos? I love this picture of her. 2y
Cuilin @ChaoticMissAdventures it‘s a while since I read it but it‘s about John James Todd a would be movie maker. It starts in the silent era so I think that‘s why they use a picture of Brooks on the cover. She may make a fictionalized cameo but I‘m not sure. The book is great. 2y
Billypar @ChaoticMissAdventures It is a great photo and interestingly not the only time it's been used as a book cover: 2y
Cuilin @Billypar another stack 🤦‍♀️ thank you though, I think I‘ll like it. It‘s also perfect for #funsizefiction 2y

Monthly #roundupgoals. This is everything I‘d like to finish before May. #naturallitsy #funsizefiction #goldenagecrimeclub Though not sure I‘ll finish Amina, due back in 3 days and I‘ve only listened to 20%. Going to NY Friday, picking up “The Franchise Affair” at Brooklyn‘s Public Library on my daughter‘s library card. What are you hoping to finish?

Daisy Miller: A Study | Henry James

Pickpick

Wonderfully quick #funsizefiction read. An early James novella about a young woman refusing to be constrained by societies “manners”. Story told through the eyes of an admiring young man. The introduction infuriatingly suggested that since James wrote heterosexual relationships so well proves he couldn‘t have been a closeted gay man. What?

IndoorDame Okay. Skipping the intro if I have time for this one. Appreciate the heads up! 2y
Cuilin @IndoorDame it‘s less than 100 pages so it really seems more of a short story. I usually read the introduction afterwards to avoid spoilers. I recommend skipping this one altogether. 2y

So begins my #funsizefiction

IndoorDame Ooh, what a pretty copy! 2y
Cuilin @IndoorDame Thanks. I was just discussing that with my daughter as it‘s her copy. She‘s reading a penguin copy of Mansfield Park right now and we were saying we would love to see the original paintings of some of the art that‘s on the covers of Penguin books. (edited) 2y
dabbe Penguin does great covers, don't they? The AGNES GREY one is gorgeous, too! 🤗 2y

Loved it. An achingly beautiful, laconic narrative. The language sparse and commanding. The simple story of a young girl‘s visit to a couple during a time of stress to her family and her experience of care. Oh and that final cinematic scene totally had me sobbing. #funsizefiction

Cathythoughts Great review. I loved Small Things. Stacked. 2y
Cuilin @Cathythoughts thanks Cathy will definitely read more from this writer. 2y

I loved to be back in this world & with these characters so much! I noticed how well created characters were and it was so easy to remember who was who. That tells that they had left their marks on me. I also loved the world, with all the cruelness.

This was a perfect recap to me because I have read the trilogy couple years ago. I think I might have liked this less if read immediately after the first book.
