Pickpick

1843 is “the last year of the world” — according to Elias Fitcher, a charismatic preacher in upstate NY. Determined to spend Eternity as a married man, he sets his eye on the three young daughters of one of his devout followers.
This reimagining of the Bluebeard tale was so good. It‘s a very dark story that I would highly recommend to dark fantasy lovers.

3.5/5⭐ I liked the blending of the Snow White fairytale with the Demeter/Persephone myth and the thematic cycles and mirror motif therein. Some of the relationships and character trajectories moved forward in ways that didn't seem logical given the information we got on the page. Overall though I enjoyed the story, the crafting of the themes, and especially the hopeful ending.

Also the cover art is stunning.

Mirrors taught: Perhaps there were always at least two sorts of reality, what you credited, and what was true.

This was a perfectly enjoyable if very straightforward retelling of the classic fairy tale. I've always rather enjoyed this one, and in this version I liked the way Wrede included excerpts from the original at the beginning of each chapter. There was nothing groundbreaking here, but if you like fairy tales, this was a nice read. It also checked off several squares for various bingo cards, so I was able to score some last-minute points!!

#WeeklyForecast - November means getting back to some of my regularly scheduled reads haha I have DO enjoyed #Scarathlon and have read loads this month, but am ready to tackle some not-mysteries!! Currently reading the tagged, which is out of renewals at the library. Rosaline is October's #LMPBC book so it it top priority. The Wodehouse is actually one I haven't read so I am excited about that. Holdfast has been, unread, on my shelf since a ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) library discard sale in the late 90s 😂 It may be time to actually read it!! The next three are a Cinderella trilogy that has been on my TBR for quite a while, followed by a random Nora Roberts. Not sure how far through the pile I will get this week, but I'm excited to delve in!! This week is our final week of picking apples at the orchard, so things should somewhat calm down after that.

LauraBrook It makes me happy to see someone else still has unread books from the 90s on their tbr! 😆 (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @LauraBrook - there is an outside chance that I read it when I very first bought it, but I definitely haven't read it since. Our library used to have an annual sale with all books for a quarter and I still seem to own a LOT of them! 😂 3y
Cinfhen Looking forward to #BookSpin day!! 3y
BookNAround @LauraBrook @TheAromaofBooks I still have some books I bought when I was in high school (my book problem is long-standing) on my tbr pile and I graduated in the late 80s. Clearly I‘ll never catch up at this point. 😂 3y

Bailedbailed

I don't expect fairy tales to be happy, but this one is chock full of misery. Well written and as brilliant as you'd expect from Tanith Lee, but just downright depressing. So much rape and violence. It isn't a pleasant read
