2/4 ⭐️

A really soft pick. It started with a lot of promise, but it felt too long after a while. I was skimming a lot at the end.

I like this book, but did the author have to include a “let‘s help you lose weight to be pretty” make over? I expect it in my #PaperbackCrush books but not a book from 2011 (or am I naive?

1. Yes, but that‘s mostly because I only have to shop for a few people. I still have to wrap everything, though. 😎
2. The main character in the tagged book helps out in her father‘s store, so there‘s some shopping involved. #two4tuesday

The Dressmaker: A Novel | Posie Graeme-Evans

my friend gave me this book and boy was it dramatic, even more than I anticipated. Ellen could not catch a break. She marries this horrible dude and when she ends up pregnant, he dips. She works to grow her skill and business as a dressmaker &once she‘s killing it, guess who shows back up? Mister no money bad attitude wack ass husband. But she‘s got friends & money on her side now. (not my fave historical romance but entertaining in the back half)

WHAT A TREASURE!!!! Chinese and Korean heritages are highlighted in this story set during the western expansion of US. Very rare. I know of only Laurence Yep for middle grade, but Park wanted to confront the absence and hatred of other cultures in the Little House books. #TeachEmpathyThroughLiterature #MiddleGradeMay @megnews

This was a wonderful story on its own, but it‘s also a perfect companion read alongside the Little House books. In 1880, Hanna is a half Chinese girl hoping for friends, education, and a future doing work that she loves. I appreciated the author‘s note about her own love for Wilder‘s books and this story as a response with another perspective.

This was excellent middle grade historical fiction on the treatment of Jewish refugees to Cuba during WWII. #MIDDLEGRADEMARCHTHROUGHTIME
