Broken Monsters | Lauren Beukes

Pickpick

Ruins of Detroit and ruins in people. Haunting but triumphant in prose, creativity, and style. Elements of the need to express (damaging) art at a larger level, yet the baddie is naïve and confused. The characters fighting are in typical positions, but written with care of the individual. Beukes has a gift: flaws are fine tuned into the compelling. Hard to put in words. The story speaks for itself.

Reggie Omg when the mom tells her daughter that she loves her and tells her to get out of the car near the end, oof the tears came down. I loved this book. AND that poor girl with the birds coming out of her chest. Yikes. 6d
DrasticallyJill I was very emotional at that part too. Plus how it had the ‘listicle‘ with TK at the end. Very online. TK was awesome. 5d

Trashcanman @Mimi28 I‘m okay Michelle, how are you? How‘s the recovery going? What‘s new? What are you excited about? Today‘s been rough to be honest. I‘m pretty lonely. But overall better 4w
Mimi28 Glad you are ok and overall better 😊 The recovery is going well - MRI on Thursday to see what the next step will be because I am still in a lot of pain. They may have to fuse a couple of discs. What‘s new- this book I am reading I Am The Swarm is really making me think about how I chose or chose not to express my emotions. The main character has bugs come out when she is hiding something or didn‘t know she was hiding some emotion. They are 👇🏽 4w
Mimi28 All graceful but still creepy. Sorry you had a rough day. I know tomorrow will be better 🫶🏽😊🫶🏽🩷 4w

Finally getting around to reading this novel that I found some time ago second-hand. Only a few pages in, but enjoying it already. Also love reading about #Detroit. #MittenLitten. Happened to visit some second hand stores today and it felt like #TimelessLove of some forgotten treasures.

This book was amazing! I enjoyed how Lauren used the mix of supernatural killer, with the added bonus of seeing how social media can end up being used as a way to unleash evil into modern everyday life. The way she was able to reflect in each person how they were flawed/broken to a varying level. Plus, she did such an amazing job at connecting them together. Highly recommend this book, I had such a hard time putting it down. I didn‘t want to stop.

This book tells the inspiring story of artist Tyree Guyton, who transformed his Detroit neighborhood into an art installation using everyday items to create works of beauty and meaning.
