When I travel I like to read something about where I‘m going, something that is not a travel guide. I enjoyed the authors writing style and context of her experiences as a sex worker for the prince of Brunei. It was good/ok.... but Probably not a book I would recommend to most.

Right up my alley as a fifth grade science teacher. #Brunei #ReadingAsia2021 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Side note: I have three more - about 600 more pages. (I'm in the middle of all three) I have 10 hours and 40 minutes. 😁

Librarybelle 😁 Good luck!!! 3y
BarbaraBB You can do it 💪🏽 3y

I‘ll give you all a break from me and make this my last post of the day. 😂 For #July #12booksof2021, the tagged book was my #readingasia2021 pick for #brunei, based on local folklore and I loved it. Short, captivating, and so good. Honorable mention to my 4 1/2 star reads: The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix and Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith.

Andrew65 Looks great. 3y

I finished this a couple of weeks back but didn‘t get round to reviewing it. Two linked stories, based on the myths and legends of #Brunei. There‘s treasure, snakes, love (maybe), betrayal and scuba diving. And as if that wasn‘t enough, we got to spend time in the Water Village, which was pretty much a character all of its own. I liked it. This is the sort of book that I #readaroundtheworld to read.

rockpools And when I do my ACTUAL trip around the world, we‘ll be stopping in Brunei! (A girl can dream!!) @BookwormM @Currey @Simona @TorieStorieS 3y
Currey Absolutely you should stop in Brunei and Sarawak and Bali - a beautiful part of the world 3y
rockpools @Currey Yes please. Have you been? It‘s a part of the world I know nothing about, but would LOVE to spend some time! 3y
Currey @rockpools Yes, but long ago… (edited) 3y

Good morning Litsy! An early #BookReport today.

Sunne has got page-turnery as we get nearer the end. I‘d love to get this finished before we hit December. 300 pages to go.

I enjoyed The Fisherman King for #Brunei -must review it sometime…

The Long Call was great - I just wasn‘t in the mood🤷🏻‍♀️

Drama Queen is very readable and engaging. You might want to avoid it if your kids are at a Steiner school though… Ongoing.

Enjoy your weekend, all!

Mehso-so

On a jungle island in SE Asia, people are suddenly dying violently, killed by an unknown force. This is a self-published book, put forward in novella-length installments, with no editing (and it shows). There‘s a decent base here for a book, but it needs a lot more drafts and polishing. I read half the installments and that was plenty for me.

Librarybelle You have to be close to finishing the challenge! 3y
BarbaraBB I think so too! 3y

#readaroundtheworld #brunei Two interwoven stories, one 6 generations in the past or 6 generations in the future about Nabau - a terrifying snake god and it‘s relationship with the divine kings of Brunei. The second story takes place in more modern times and seems less about good and evil and more about desire, obsession and belonging. As the two stories become one, the frightening fairy tale quality of the first takes over the second.

Currey @Simona @rockpools @TorieStorieS @sprainedbrain @BookwormM I knew nothing about Brunei and in many ways this story is about how the Islamic faith took over the Hindu gods. Ultimately I didn‘t think the two stories were of equal weight. The main character in the modern tale had very confusing motivations that were not quite worked out. I almost rated it so-so but I did learn about Brunei so I finally rated it a pick. 3y
rockpools Hmmm. 🤔 I‘m kind of looking forward to trying this one. And I know NOTHING about Brunei! 3y
BookwormM This is my choice as well looking forward to it 3y

Weaving a Bruneian legend into a story of a fisherman, the author really managed to hold my attention as she switched between the two. Am thankful for this local-ish publisher that brings these South East Asian voices to the masses.

BarbaraBB This sounds like a good choice and the reason we participate in the challenge, to find those local voices. I feel always lucky when I find such a book! 3y

Based on Bruneian folklore, cobbled together from various sources in much the same way the MC Lisan learns his history and life‘s purpose, this is a fascinating story that I couldn‘t put down. I can‘t say much more without spoilers. I loved this though and am glad it was my pick for #readingasia2021 #brunei💖

BarbaraBB Lucky you to have found this one! 3y
Smarkies I'm reading this too for Brunei! Good to know it is a pick from you. :) 3y

Although this is my pick for #Brunei I didn‘t learn anything about that country, except that Brunei is absolute monarchy under the sovereign rule of sultan who have two brothers, and one of them - Prince Jefri like to collect the girls from all around the world in his personal harem. I appreciated that J.Lauren doesn't make excuses for her decisions, and that is also my reason for pick. #ReadingAsia2021

Librarybelle Great review! I have this lined up for #Brunei too! 4y
Simona Thank you @Librarybelle It‘s, in some way, fun book to read, and actually the only book set in Brunei that I found. 4y
Reggie There‘s is an E True Hollywood story about the Sultan of Brunei and it was wild to hear about all the girls, jewelry, and crazy mind games that were played. 4y
Simona @reggie When I finished the book I fell in the google rabbit hole and it‘s hard to understand so excessive life style ... but I guess that the combination of the money and boredom can be tricky 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
