Cinfhen
Sharp Objects: A Novel | Gillian Flynn

Mehso-so

Not sure how to rate this one 🤔Definitely dark, disturbing, gripping and twisted...Never wanted to bail, yet I'm not sure I enjoyed the ride. Much of the story was so over the top and really implausible 😱Not my favorite, but won't deny that Gillian Flynn can write batty a&$ characters !!! This is my #letterF ~ #LitsyAtoZ weapon for #ERMadlibs and #bookbyfemalewriter ~ @BetterWorldBooks

Cinfhen @Foxyfictionista Ready to discuss 😉🤓 8y
britt_brooke Totally agree with your review. 👏🏻 8y
Foxyfictionista @Cinfhen Wow, that was fast! My biggest problem with it was the end when she made us think that it was one person but then in the next chapter it was someone else. Misdirection is good but this was an exceptionally clumsy attempt which made me feel cheated. I didn't understand anyone's motivation and while I don't think that characters have to always be likeable, you have to be able to sympathise with them. I just didn't. What are your thoughts? 8y

Cinfhen Yes, Flynn certainly was pulling strings with her readers. Although throughout the story, I thought the mom was the culprit and that seemed so obvious, that I was kind of expecting a twist at the end. There was NO understanding or good enough explanation as to the motivation for the killings and I really didn't feel for any of the characters, even the two dead girls ( which made me feel pretty heartless) @Foxyfictionista 8y
Cinfhen I also didn't buy into any of the behaviors of the whole town, nor the fact that Camille could be functioning in the drugged induced state she was in. Didn't you find that highly unlikely @Foxyfictionista 8y
Vinjii I agree with your review. She's great at writing psychotic characters. But the end was a bit far fetched. 8y
Foxyfictionista @Cinfhen I actually thought that it was the sister at one point and then it was the mother so I thought that was the twist. But then there was a twist on the twist? By that time I was just tired of the whole thing. I didn't feel anything for the victims either. I really didn't care about anyone in this story. I agree with your statement about her drug induced state. Further to that... 8y
Foxyfictionista @Cinfhen ...what grown person would take drugs with their 13 year old sister??? That made no sense to me. At all. It was just a train wreck from start to finish for me. 8y
LazyLibrary I always feel the same way about her. She's a great writer for sure, but her characters are so unsavory! I still have Dark Places on my list, so we shall see if that falls into the same pattern 8y
Cinfhen @Foxyfictionista It was at the point, when the 13 year old sister was supplying E to her 30 year old sister in a mansion filled with drug hazed teens that I wrote WTF??? I'm sorry, I honestly can't see that EVER happening 8y
Cinfhen @LazyLibrary I own Dark Places, too but I think I'm taking a break from Gillian Flynn for awhile. There are so many other authors writing thrillers, that I'd like to try/ read! 8y
Cinfhen @Vinjii & @britt_brooke I'm still glad I read it, just not sure if it's worth all the "hype" 8y
Foxyfictionista @Cinfhen perhaps I've led a sheltered life but that part didn't ring true to me either. I had Dark Places on my tbr list but I've taken it off. I've read two of her books and both of them annoyed me so I'll just walk away. 8y
MyNamesParadise It was a Pan for me because all of the detail about self harming and the extent of the child abuse and the cruelness of the girls and women it was just not for me. That being said I loved Dark Places and The Grownup and really liked Gone Girl. 8y
AprilMae I preferred Dark Places to this one. I felt the dynamics between the sisters to be unrealistic at best. I realize that there are strange family ties out there yet this seemed too choppy and forced. I feel as if it would have been more realistic for the mother to have done it. 8y
CaroPi Actually this is my favorite novel from all the books of #gillianflynn maybe I like books that are a bit gory.... And I think that her absolute best is #thegrownup (edited) 8y
