The Widows of Malabar Hill (Parveen Mistry 1), by Sujata Massey (2018)

Premise: India‘s first female solicitor takes the case of three Muslim widows living in seclusion, but must think quickly when the estate‘s overseer is found dead.

Review: This was a fascinating novel. The mystery was compelling but I appreciated it most as a window into the complex relationships between ethnic and religious communities in India under British rule. Cont

Mattsbookaday What didn‘t work for me were the long digressions into the MC‘s relationship with her estranged husband — while it definitely emphasized why the widows‘ plight meant so much to her, a tenth of this backstory would be enough.

This came recommended, and I‘m so glad! Fantastic cozy mystery set in 1920s Bombay, featuring a female lawyer/sleuth. It involves different cultures and religions found in the city at the time, and all that goes with it. Really well done! (And it got me a #bingo to close the year #bookspinbingo )

Tales from Firozsha Baag | Rohinton Mistry

Rohinton Mistry‘s first book, a interwoven set of short stories that explore the everyday lives of people in one apartment complex called Firozsha Baag has Mistry‘s signature style of delving into the mundane lives of normal people and making something beautiful and poignant out of it. A tremendously talented writer, manages to evoke intricacies of human characteristics and relationships beautifully. I love his novels more but this was great too.

4.5 Stars • 3rd in the series • Perveen Mistry, a pioneering female lawyer in 1920s Bombay, investigates the will of the wealthy Solicitor family patriarch. Uncovering potential forgery and family secrets, she navigates cultural and legal challenges to resolve the inheritance dispute, all while facing personal and professional obstacles in a society dominated by British rule and traditional norms.

I enjoyed this third installment of the Perveen Mistry series, even if the ending was a little too tidy. I accidentally downloaded the next one from Libby, so I will at least start it there even though I have a hard copy.

It turns out I was a little hasty consolidating all my #serieslove2024 into one collage, so for various reasons I‘ve separated the mysteries from the rest again for now.

Apparently, my Rakuten Kobo Elipsa checks geolocation and without any info message, it declines access to Helsinki City Library from Riga, Latvia :/ Luckily, I found the way to connect my e-reader to VPN network in Finland and I was able to borrow the book as I was craving for more Indian stories besides so close to my heart “A Suitable Boy“ ❤️

Dilara Wow, glad you were tech-savvy enough to find a workaround. I know libraries all over the world have been the targets of cyber attacks and have to be cautious, but I didn't think they'd deny access from outside the country to someone with a legit account...
Enjoy your Indian stories! 😁

kassandrik @Dilara, actually, that's some weird Kobo's behaviour, because I could borrow the book from the Helsinki Digital library in my Libby mobile app, but e-reader ignored my library card until I could get into Finnish network :/ doesn't make sense at all to me, because, as you said, I am still a very much legit library member 😀 (edited) 11mo
Dilara @kassandrik Very strange! Glad you accessed the book in the end 😁 11mo

A Murder on Malabar Hill | Sujata Massey

A fast and gripping murder mystery investigated by the first female solicitor of Bombay in 1920s India (based on the first two female lawyer/solicitor(s) of India). Rich in highlighting Parsi and Muslim cultures, and the history of Bombay, the story is fast-paced, with careful attention to detail. Although I wasn‘t particularly astonished by the ending, I definitely enjoyed reading all 400 odd pages of the book.

TOP. Veramente un libro che merita un film. Particolare come lettura e storia, sicuramente molto romanzata ma un gran libro appassionante. Hanno poi fatto il secondo ma non ha nulla a che vedere con questo

Part historical fiction, set in 1920s Mumbai of British India, showcasing Parsi life and culture, a murder mystery, and the first woman solicitor navigating her way through a patriarchal system make it an interesting read.
