The Good Son: A Novel | You-Jeong Jeong

Pickpick

A boy wakes up drenched in blood and finds his mother death. At first, he remembers nothing. Has he had a fit and killed her, he wonders. Then his memory slowly comes back. Of what happened in the past few ours as well as in the years before. Bit by bit this fast-paced Korean thriller unravels a lot of mindf**ing things. Scary, disturbing and unputdownable.

Such a great birthday present Jessie, thank you again for sending me this one! 💕

batsy Great review! I too found it "scary, disturbing, and unputdownable" ?? 5y
BarbaraBB @batsy It was great! I think you were the one putting it on my radar, thanks, I needed this 😂💜 5y

#bookmail

A delivery from Abebooks - exciting because I couldn‘t find these in NZ or new online. I love this site - and a note if you‘re in the Southern Hemisphere - filter your search to UK bookshops because the postage is so much cheaper than from the US.

@batsy when I first started following you on GR I noted some of your 5 star reads to add to my TBR - so these are two of them. Truly #blameitonbatsy 😂

ReadingEnvy I love the Devi so so much but several people I know felt it was too dark to finish. 6y
Centique @ReadingEnvy oooh good to know! I will try my best 🤞 6y
batsy That is such a lovely compliment ☺️❤️ I get nervous about this so I really hope you enjoy them! 😁 Like @ReadingEnvy says the Devi book is dark but it's so perfectly constructed and I love the style. The Ambai stories are unique and beautiful. 6y
Centique @batsy I‘m reading the Devi now and it is beautiful and horrific and like nothing else I‘ve ever read. It‘s making me see the point of following small presses to get to read truly unique voices 😍 6y
batsy Yes! Small presses publish some truly remarkable fiction that goes under the radar sometimes (and can be quite hard to access for those of us outside US/UK!) Also, beautiful and horrific sums up this book ❤️💔 6y

This one falls squarely in the #blameitonbatsy pile. 😂 I saw this in your feed @batsy and needed to read it. My first Georgette Heyer! It suited my mood perfectly because I had been feeling tetchy about Christmas plans and here was an unlikeable high society family snapping and grumping at each other until somebody ends up murdered. Made me feel quite chipper it did. 😉 3.5 stars but I‘d give it an extra one for cheering me up 👌

rockpools I didn‘t know she‘d written murder mysteries! 6y
Centique @RachelO apparently she wrote quite a number but not as popular as her romances. 😊 6y
batsy Hahaha! I'm so glad you gave it a try and enjoyed it. Now I just need someone to make me read it! 😆 6y

mabell I'm re-reading it now! I LOVE this book! So smart and snarky, everyone so selfish, and the whodunnit tricky - it's great! Hemingway makes it for me too. He is in a number of her mysteries. 6y
Tamra Funny, I looked for this on Libby and there was a wait for it, but I clicked on Envious Casca just to investigate Heyer and it‘s the same novel, published with different name and cover. No wait for this one! 😁 6y
Centique @mabell it WAS a tricky whodunnit and I really liked Hemingway! 😊 6y
Centique @Tamra well done! 6y

King Kong Theory | Virginie Despentes

Thanks to @Billypar I've been listening to the song #SheWill by Savages. The perfect embodiment of this fiery rebellious punk spirit to my mind is always Virginie Despentes, and this is a quote from the angry and brilliant tagged book.

#NoFemmeber @Billypar @Cinfhen

Kalalalatja Great quote! 6y
Cathythoughts Excellent choice... I read one of her books #BlameItOnBatsy & it was good 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
erzascarletbookgasm This quote 👏! I still haven‘t read this author. Must rectify next year.. 6y

CampbellTaraL Oh wow, I need to read this ASAP. Thanks for the prompting! 😀 6y
merelybookish Great quote!! Reminds me a bit of the description of the "cool girl" in Flynn's Gone Girl. A different but equally impossible male fantasy of the perfect woman. 6y
batsy @Kalalalatja @erzascarletbookgasm It's a great quote isn't it 🙌🏽 6y
batsy @Cathythoughts Haha! I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed a book of hers ❤️ 6y
batsy @taraWritesSci My pleasure 😊 6y
batsy @merelybookish You're so right, I didn't think of that but that's another one of those badass quotes that capture a whole culture! 6y
Billypar Excellent quote and what a perfect picture to pair with it! 😀 I love all the contrasts she rattles off- she really nails ridiculous gender ideals that are often unacknowledged. 6y
batsy @Billypar She's so good with that in this book! And this is a cover from one of the French editions, I believe. Too good not to use 😊 6y
GatheringBooks oh this one sounds perfect for our #WomenReadWomen2019 theme! i have to get me a copy of this one. 6y

I‘m going to call this one #blameitonbatsy 😂😂 Because @batsy mentioned her favourite sleuthing duo was Poirot and Ariadne Oliver - I hadn‘t read one with Ariadne in it yet, so I had to address that oversight quickly! This was classic Poirot; reading them is like going to visit an old friend - I was totally duped by the final reveal and suitably anxious along the way. Ariadne is a great character 😍

batsy 😂 Yay! So happy you liked it. I remember this one as being good fun. I'm being good and following along chronologically with the #agathachristieclub and I think her stronger books come a bit later. 7y
LiteraryinPA This is a great one! Glad you liked it. 7y
Ruthiella Absolutely one of my favorites with Poirot😀 and I love Mrs. Oliver and how she complains about her fictional Finnish detective! 🤪 7y

Centique @batsy I‘m jumping around which is unlike me! I think I used to just grab whichever was on the library shelf. My favourite is the last one, Roger Ackroyd, I loved that so much. 7y
Centique @LiteraryinLititz @Ruthiella I loved having the 4 sleuths and Ariadne is SO funny about her detective novels 🤣 7y
Dragon I love Ariadne Oliver and her love of apples 🍎💜 7y

I am always amazed at how many Littens continually #payitforward with giveaways. @eanderson is hosting #oneofthreegiveaway where you are asked to share a picture of 3 books on your TBR wishlist that you‘d like to receive - then use the hashtags above. Best thing ever is that it is open to everyone, now that is truly an awesome giveaway.

batsy Great picks! Land of Smoke is really altering my expectations of short stories in the best possible way. 7y
GatheringBooks @batsy i added that book specifically because of your awesome review, so this is definitely a #BlameItOnLitsy title. or #BlameItOnBatsy! :) 7y
