I Like Things (Revised) | Margaret Hillert

Pickpick

Thank you @megnews for solving the #ER #BlackMainCharacterPublishedBefore2000 conundrum, which had me totally stumped - I found a 1982 copy (originally published 1950) of another of Margaret Hillert‘s books, this one about a small child who likes collecting, sorting & arranging things - buttons, stamps, shells. A traditional #ER book containing 64 repeated words, that‘s stood the test of time. This one‘s also been reissued with new illustrations.

I chose this for #bbrc #er #blackmaincharacterpublishedbefore2000. It was hard to find an ER to fit this, as my library is really on top of weeding and replacing children‘s books as they age. This was 1st published in 1989, but had been reprinted. It needs a new update, but the info is good. The sentence structure & vocab used is great for new readers trying to become stronger readers. Inspiring story.

TheKidUpstairs That one is a tough prompt for me too! 4y
LibrarianRyan Yeah. You kind of grabbed on to why I chose it. Black main characters in Easy Readers were few and far between except of the Little Bill Books, which most libraries weeded after the trial. 4y
Sarahreadstoomuch @TheKidUpstairs it is for multiple reasons: there wasn‘t as much published then as now, and kids books don‘t hold up over time. But it can be done! May take a little digging and checking copyright dates, but that‘s why it‘s a challenge, right? 4y

Sarahreadstoomuch @LibrarianRyan oh, yeah. Definitely. And if you think about it- the kids looking to see themselves in books 20 years ago are now parents or at least parent-aged and are helping drive publishing to print more books with inclusive and diverse representation 4y
Susanita He was inducted into the Hall of Fame on this day in 1962. 4y
Sarahreadstoomuch @Susanita wow! Thank you for telling me! This book gave the year, but. Or the day. 4y
