Hound of the Baskervilles | Arthur Conan Doyle
post image

158 years ago today (22nd May) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born. Amazing how strongly his work is still going with many re-births for Sherlock Holmes over the years. #authorbirthdays

Who played your favourite Holmes?

Melissa_J I've never read a Sherlock Holmes book 😳. And the only movies I've seen are the Robert Downey Jr ones (which I did love). Can you believe that? 8y
DGRachel Basil Rathbone will always be Sherlock Holmes to me. I enjoy Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal as well, but Basil has my heart. 8y
Andrew65 @DGRachel Would have to agree with you @DGRachel. Basil Rathbone symbolises Sherlock for me but the Benedict Cumberbatch series is very good. 8y

Andrew65 @Melissa_J That is quite amazing Melissa. I think you would enjoy the modern Working of Sherlock played by Benedict Cumberbatch. I enjoyed Anthony Horowitz's version of Sherlock (a lot) 8y
ValerieAndBooks I really liked Jeremy Brett as Sherlock in the PBS series several years ago. 8y
Andrew65 @ValerieAndBooks Jeremy Brett was also good in this role. 8y

May 15th
On this date in 1856 L Frank Baum was born, the author of The Wizard of Oz books, of which there are 14 in the series. The first one was published at the turn of the Century in 1900. Whilst having seen the film several times (!) I am ashamed to say I have never read one of the books. I do need to rectify that! Has anyone read them? Are they a good read?
#authorbirthdays

Lmstraubie I have never read them either. 😶 But I loved the movie and Wicked 😉 8y
rubyslippersreads I've read them all. 😀 My favorite is actually The Land of Oz I love the first book, but for me, this is a rare case where the movie is better. 🌈👠 8y
asiriusreader I read the first one a long time ago--worth a read! And probably worth a reread for me! 8y
Andrew65 Thanks everyone for the feedback, will look to incorporate the first one into my reading plan. 8y

Artemis Fowl | Eoin Colfer
post image

May 14th
Happy Birthday to. Eoin Colfer, writer of the Artemis Fowl series. I have never tried this series of books, but feel I really should give the series a try! #authorbirthdays. Has any one else read them? Any thoughts?

It is also the birthday of George Lucas of Star Wars fame - such a shame he wasn't born on May 4th.

Follyfoot | Monica Dickens

May 10th #authorbirthdays

Monica Dickens who wrote the Follyfoot series was born on May 10th in 1915. She was the great grand daughter of Charles Dickens. These are good books set around horses and farms, and usual involve some mystery. They made a tv series based on this in the early 1970s.

Also born on this day, Barbara Taylor Bradford who wrote the Emma Harte series, which starts with Woman of Substance, many of these were made into tv films.

Mr. Happy | Roger Hargreaves, M. C. Hargreaves

May 9 #AuthorBirthdays

Roger Hargreaves writer of the classic Mr Men and Little Miss books was born on this day in 1935, unbelievably almost 30 years since he died but the books very much live on.
Also two other authors that are no longer with us also share this anniversary - J. M. Barrie, writer of Peter Pan, and Richard Adams, writer of Watership Down. Both of these are such classics!

Lmstraubie My students LOVE the Little Miss & Little Mr. books. Mine collection is falling apart, but I have a hard time finding them in the States through my vendors. 8y
Andrew65 @Lmstraubie They are great early reading books, who wouldn't love them. 8y
