A Ladder to the Sky | John Boyne

A little visitor came and read with me today. I guess even the smallest creatures know a good book when they see one. (The book is A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne) 🦋📖 #aladdertothesky #readingbuddy #lol #funny #cute

A marvellous novel about writing, ambition and betrayal, with some lovely vignettes of literary giants strewn along the way. One of the most entertaining book I have read this year. 5/5 stars - Boyne has done it once again. He has written a powerful, character-driven novel that captivated me from the very first page. This book is very different than Furies, and yet I loved it all the same. The main character, Maurice Swift, is the type of character you absolutely love to hate. He has no moral compass and he will do anything to get ahead in his literary career. I highly recommend! 🤩 #jpbookreview #bookreview #aladdertothesky

MelissaSue81 Indeed.. Maurice May be one of the most despicable characters ever written! But a fantastic story. 6y
HOTPock3tt I can‘t wait to read this book!! ♥️ 6y
rdkate Loved Furies and Boy in the striped pajamas, so excited to read this! 6y

plemmdog Looking forward to this! 6y
DannyOlda Yes, finishing this tonight and feel exactly the same way. Maurice is wonderfully easy to love to hate and the dialogue of the last quarter if the book is so good. 6y

Maurice Swift has my vote for one of the most ruthless men in literature. He will stop at nothing in order to get a published novel even though he doesn't have an original plot idea. He manages a story that puts him at the top. Matter of ethics will keep the pages turning. Boynes‘ writing flows easy and makes for a quick book. Read A Ladder to the Sky. You will not be disappointed. Thanks to NetGalley and Hogarth Pub for copy for honest review.

Andrew65 They will love your review, which is fully deserved. A wonderful book. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Thanks! 6y

KatieDid927 It‘s been a really slow start for me with this one, it just has NOT grabbed me yet, but all the positive reviews has me pushing through! 6y
EadieB @KatieDid927 Sometimes it takes a good bit before a book kicks in. I hang in if I know others enjoyed it. I‘m reading Circe right now which everyone really enjoyed but that genre really is not a favorite of mine. Give me a gory mystery thriller and I am very happy. I will stick with Circe because of the Buddy Read and hope it gets more interesting for me. I‘m also having the same problem with Transcription by Kate Atkinson. 6y
KatieDid927 @EadieB Thanks! I really liked Circe a lot. It is also my kind of thing though. Admittedly it does start out slow too. 6y

A Ladder To The Sky - A Very Powerful Read!

Andrew65 I bet he wish he never said that! 6y
Lola @Andrew65 😂😂So true....😳 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Lola Definitely should have regretted that statement. 6y

Lola So this part reminded me very much of another book, out a couple of years ago, where the taking of someone else‘s story and turning it into a “fiction” book was a focal point/theme. I thought this book might be a tired retelling of that one, but John Boyne is a master and so it isn‘t, much to my relief. 6y
EadieB @Lola Do you remember the name of the other book? 6y
Lola @andrew65 @EadieB Are you two reading ARCs or are you outside of the US? I was so anxious to read this that I ordered it from UK-based Book Depository so I could read it ahead of the US pub date. 🙃 6y
EadieB @Lola Andrew is in the UK and I got my copy from NetGalley. 6y
Andrew65 @Lola He certainly has the Midas touch, only read 3 or 4 of his but all hits and favourites. The ending of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. 😭 6y
Andrew65 @Lola As Eadie says I am in the U.K. and wasn‘t even a waiting list at the local library, just went in and picked it off the shelves! 6y
Lola @EadieB I do but I didn‘t want to be spoilery for that one 😬It‘s (edited) 6y
EadieB @Lola I‘ll have to check it out. Thanks! 6y
Lola @EadieB I have NEVER been turned down for an ARC by NetGalley as fast as I I was for this book 😂 6y
Lola @EadieB It‘s a good one! 6y
Lola @Andrew65 Lucky you! 6y
Andrew65 @Lola I was surprised. 6y
EadieB @Lola possibly you requested it from NetGalley when they had so many requests. I requested it in the beginning of October when they may have wanted more reviews closer to US publish date. 6y
Lola @EadieB That could be; I requested it back in August. 6y
