A Wrinkle in Time | Madeleine L'Engle

Pickpick

I reread this, again, for the #timereadalong. I'm nervous about the film, because from the previews Meg seems strong but not super awkward.
In this reading I was thinking more about how L'Engle presents a world where religion and science go together and aren't in opposition. I hadn't remembered the novel as having so much religion in it!
Favorite things - the opening kitchen scene, Aunt Beast, the different planets, Calvin. @jesshowbooks

TommieMarie74 I just reread this too, and I thought the same thing. Apparently I was so absorbed in the plot as a kid that I didn‘t notice all the religion. During my reread, I also felt there were things that lacked explanation and I wished for a little more story to fill in the gaps. I don‘t remember (or didn‘t notice) these gaps as a kid. 7y
Gayan I am getting ready to do a reread and can't wait to see what I think of it as an adult. 7y
Texreader You make me want to reread it. Definitely one of my fave books as a child. I‘ve since bought the whole series so I do need to read them. 7y

ReadingEnvy @TommieMarie74 I could have spent entire books on each planet, what did you want more information on? 7y
ReadingEnvy @Texreader I gifted myself the whole series too. There is that readalong that's just one a month, pretty doable. #timereadalong 7y
ReadingEnvy @Texreader I first reread it when I taught a reading class two years ago and everyone had to reread their favorites. One of my students had this one as a favorite too and we both agreed it held up. 7y
Kboltz Ok so I heard an interview with Oprah and Reese and Mindy, and in that discussion I swear I heard them say that there are quotes from Jay Z and more, please tell me that I am wrong in them changing/updating that sort! 7y
ReadingEnvy @Kboltz oh geez, oh no, I'm so nervous about it. I'll have to go in thinking of it as it's own thing.... 7y
Kboltz That‘s what I‘m thinking!😬🤞🏼 7y

I realized some of you may not have IG! So I‘ll try to summarize what we said. I find the themes of conformity and free will fascinating, and I love how Meg‘s faults become her strengths. I also think it‘s a perfect blend of fantasy & sci fi.
Eleanor likes the flying creature and is pretty convinced that tesseracts are real. (She‘s been taking big sideways leaps around the house, whispering “Wrinkle in time!” as she does it. 😂 #timereadalong

Johanna414 That‘s fantastic! I remember reading it at about her age and Aunt Beast was my favorite, but I also was pretty convinced I could tesser if I tried hard enough... 7y
AlaMich I think I will have to reread. I read it as a kid—not sure how old—but I remember virtually nothing. And with LeGuin‘s death, it seems like the right time. 7y
CSeydel Thanks! 7y

I took the rest of the #timereadalong discussion live on my IG! I interviewed Eleanor, who is currently reading the book for the first time! 🙂 I‘m also jesshowbooks on Instagram if you wanna check out the rest.

Question 1: 1962: Cuban Missile Crisis, mapping of DNA, manned space flight in its infancy. How does this framework shape your view of this book at publication?
Question 2: Did you catch the opening line? Did you know that L‘Engle deliberately borrowed the “worst opening line in literature” (originally penned by Edward George Bulwer-Lytton in 1830)?
Question 3: Which character did you most identify with?
#timereadalong
(More questions later!)

ReadingEnvy 1. Well it certainly allows for a rather fantastical version of space travel, rather than scientific. Of course it is with other beings who don't need to travel linearly and that helps! 7y
ReadingEnvy 3. When I was young this was my favorite book ... It was always Meg. And the way Calvin slips into her life and has automatic acceptance for her was something I craved!! I saw a spoiler in the family tree about what else happens and now I'm really looking forward to reading the rest. I remembered this one but not the others , if I ever read them at all. 7y

Some comfort reading with my all time favorite before bed. I might not have finished it by the 15th, but I‘ve read it enough times that I‘ll still be able to take part in the #timereadalong discussion

Hey guys! The #timereadalong discussion may be a little weak this month — we‘ve been passing the stomach flu around, and I‘m behind on all the things! But I promise that later months will be better! And I‘ll put something of some sort up on Thursday. Who‘s already done with A WRINKLE IN TIME??

Liatrek Oh I didn‘t know there was a read along 😊 I finished the first book early this month. I was wondering if I should read the next book and now I have my motivation 📚 7y
howjessicareads @Liatrek woohoo! I haven‘t done a great job of publicizing it, so I think a lot of people didn‘t know. 🙂 7y
Johanna414 I‘ve been wanting to reread this series... maybe this is the motivation I need! 7y
howjessicareads @Johanna414 Yes! Join us!! 🙂 7y
Johanna414 @jesshowbooks I‘ll start A Wrinkle in Time after the little guy goes to bed tonight! 😋 7y
