Jessie Childs draws Henry Howard for us, complete with his strengths as and weaknesses, neither hero nor villain. And in so doing she illustrates the terrifying times of Henrican England. Henry VIII‘s tyranny, paranoia, megalomania, and hubris are all too familiar in our age. An appropriate read just prior to the upcoming inauguration.#bookedintime @Cuilin

Cuilin Every book I‘m reading lately seems to have parallels to current times, Hard Times, Les Mis, Anna Karenina,, and Tudor Times. I‘m realizing that not enough people read these books or history and it shows. 3d
Lcsmcat @Cuilin Younailed it. I think a large part in what got us where we are was the demotion of the humanities and the gutting of arts education. 3d
RamsFan1963 I just read Henry V biography by Dan Jones, and now I'm reading The War of The Roses, also by Jones. It sounds like something I need to read next. 2d
Lcsmcat @RamsFan1963 I‘ve not read anything by him. I‘ll have to check him out. 2d
Cuilin @RamsFan1963 I read The Plantagenets, it was so good. I have Henry V on my TBR and now I‘m adding The War of the Roses. 2d

I picked this up because I heard the author on a panel about the Tudor era, and so far it doesn‘t disappoint.

I didn't love this book but I didn't hate it either - it was a little long but I'll never forget it. The book seems to be true to it's time. I wish the witchcraft had been dialed down a bit. It seemed overdone at times, making the book less historical fiction. The characters are all awful people and the relationships absolutely toxic - but I feel this works for the time period. This is a dark read.

Note: Many trigger warnings in this book.

Cuilin I understand, magical realism can ruin a book for me. I don‘t mind a sprinkling but too much takes me out of the time period and becomes more of the fantasy genre. 3d

The 4th in the Matthew Shardlake series and my favorite so far. I intended to only read the January section but was drawn in and couldn‘t stop. I have lots of thoughts and hope I can remember them when time to discuss. 4.5 🌟. @dabbe

dabbe I hope I can, too! 🤩😂🤗 1w
Cuilin 🎉 I just read book one and ready to start book 2 and may even catch up. 😮 @dabbe 1w
dabbe @Cuilin They're good, aren't they? Do you want me to put you on the tag list? 1w
Cuilin @dabbe yes please. They remind me of another historical mystery series I read years ago though I can‘t remember which one. Maybe Cadfael? I‘m not sure. 1w

Bailedbailed

I had to bail it after I went to another two chapters. This is definitely not a good book for an audiobook. I could not follow half of the thoughts because a zillion of names have been mentioned. I am pretty sure in ghe printed version there‘s a deawing of a family tree or something, but to follow the branches of a family without the possibility to see it does not work. And then this weird computerized voice. Not my thing. 🤦‍♀️

This ebook sounded very interesting but the recording sounds like an automatic computer reading out the text. I am not sure if I will be able to listen to it for another 15 hours even though I am really interested in the topic. It is just too difficult to listen to. 🙈

Catherine Howard has been portrayed as a #dramaqueen in history…youthful, flamboyant, a massive flirt, and supposedly “broke” Henry VIII‘s heart with her affairs. Also, she‘s a distant relation to Anne Boleyn.

The tagged book has been on my tbr, and it‘s about time to read it!

Confession: I love Matchbox Twenty - talk about ‘90s alt music. She‘s So Mean is from about 10 years ago. Definite drama queen. The video is a riot. #TitlesAndTunes

Cinfhen Excellent choices!!! Im really loving all the #TitlesAndTunes 💜🎶😁 1y
Deblovestoread I am a Matchbox Twenty fan, too, so I love your song choice. And after seeing The Six, want to read your book choice. Win-win for me😃 1y
LibrarianRyan love, Matchbox 20 is resurfacing after the Barbie movie. Push becomes Kens anthem 1y

Librarybelle @Deblovestoread Thank you!! And yes, it was thanks to seeing The Six that I thought of Catherine Howard! 1y
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan I know! I still have to see the movie, but I thought it was so awesome that Ken has a connection with Push! 1y
Centique Oooh im so interested in this book! My book club read The Fifth Queen by Ford Maddox Ford many years ago and I was so fascinated by Katherine (having read so much more about Henrys first three wives) AND ive always loved Matchbox 20 and Rob Thomas 😍 Great picks! 1y
Librarybelle @Centique Oh! I have not read The Fifth Queen yet! I know a bit more about the first three wives, too, so this will be a treat. Thanks!! 1y

Two thoughts:

I'm genuinely impressed that Gareth Russell managed to squeeze 650 pages out of a not-that-interesting woman who died while she was still in her teens.

I cannot get over the sheer number of people whose lives were ruined because a flighty teenager got bored with her middle-aged husband and started a flirtmance with an ex-boyfriend.

Tamra You have patience! 2y
Sophronisba @Tamra it's a really good book! Russell is a good writer and everything about the Tudor court mores and intrigue is super-interesting. But Catherine herself was just an unremarkable teenager who happened to catch the eye of the king. 2y

What should have been an interesting story reads more like a textbook IMO - dry and to the point with lack of emotion so dissatisfied and with that I‘m on to the next book .. hopefully adventure awaits 😃
