Sleepless | Sarah Vaughn

Pickpick

Happy #StaffPickFriday from Rare bookseller Morgan! ????????? by Leila Del Duca & Sarah Vaughn ?: "This is the most amazing thing I've read in a long time. It's a story of magic and intrigue in which our heroine, the illegitimate daughter of the king, fears for her life. But her sleepless knight is there to protect her. Or is he? The fact that he hasn't slept in years is affecting him..." Find it on the 2nd fl in our comics section! ?

Main floor bookseller Garrett K recommends Kristen Gallerneaux's High Static, Dead Lines for #staffpickfriday! ✨✨✨⠀
"This fascinating collection of essays sits at the intersection of hauntology, sound studies, history of technology, personal history and memory, and North American folklore. Gallerneaux's background as a folklorist is what really makes this collection shine."

Killing Commendatore | Haruki Murakami

Pickpick

Bookseller Jacob recommends Haruki Murakami's latest work, Killing Commendatore. “Murakami‘s magical realism is comfort food to me: lots of lonely people thinking about life while eating delicious meals and listening to music alone. His new novel hits all those notes in a story about a painter navigating the divide between Eastern and Western approaches to art—echoing Murakami‘s own American-influenced Japanese writing style.” #staffpickfriday

October Country | Ray Bradbury

Pickpick

Lizzy recommends 2 favs from Ray Bradbury this #StaffPickFriday. "Nothing says October to me like Bradbury! The Halloween Tree was the first Bradbury book I ever read (perfect for middle grade readers). It‘s fast paced & a blast to read! For adult readers, The October Country is a collection of short stories that are classic Bradbury - filled with horror, nostalgia, and longing, not to mention a crisp of autumn air chilling each one.” #bannedbooks

BookBabe I‘m hoping to read it this month! 6y

Today‘s staff pick is 'The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington,' selected by Rare Book Room manager, Jane. "Talking animals, witches, murder, debutantes, bestiality. One of these subjects alone is enough for a novel but you will find all these things in Leonora Carrington's absurd and sometimes hilarious surrealist stories. Check it out if you want strange dreams." Find it on our Small Press table! #staffpickfriday

saresmoore Fun! I just bought this as a staff pick from Malaprop‘s in Asheville, NC! 6y

Time to enjoy this #staffpick by Desirée from the 2nd floor. “Kandinsky explores the synesthetic aspects of color and how it has the potential to influence our moods on a deeper level. In this in depth analysis, he proposes that colors can not only be seen, but that there are shapes and sounds that can be attributed to them. It ...can help understand the importance of chromatic imagery not only in art but in films, books & life!" #staffpickfriday

ericas Thanks for sharing it. It's so interesting to see the effort to understand colors, their vibrations and the perception of them from any different point of view..a lot has passed from Goethe's Theory of Colours who shortly explained "Yellow is a light which has been dampened by darkness; blue is a darkness weakened by light" 6y

TGI #StaffPickFriday! Andrea from our Marketing team recommends The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. "This might be one of my favorite Neil Gaiman books. It's pretty short, and you can probably read it easily in a day or two, but it will stay on your mind much long. Reading it felt like being in a dream, sometimes a nightmare. The slightly supernatural tones enhance but do not overshadow the overall message of the power stories."

Each story in Bobcat is both a long poem and a mini-novel. I reread it for comfort and to marvel at what language can do when Rebecca Lee is in charge. It is pure beauty; there is nothing else like it. --Olivia L., main floor.
