I may return to this at some point since I bought it on Libro.FM, but for now I‘m bailing at 32%. Unfortunately it‘s very dry and academic and not holding my interest. I wanted more info about how silk fabrics evolved around the world, but so far it‘s mostly about silk moths, where they may have originated and where humans transported them as we spread. Which could have been interesting, but isn‘t presented in a format I‘m absorbing. Oh well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a WWII historical novel, although with a different perspective. I learned about the silk trade in England during WWII.
I thought the character development was solid. These were flawed but decent characters and thoroughly relatable.

I see this has mixed reviews, but I loved it. The author talks about the role of women and how these silk factory had freedoms and expectations from people around them. It ends with the war between China and Japan, with the reminder of how brutal it was. The main characters—all women—are friends, rivals, lovers. Tsukiyama handled it with grace and delicacy.
