I read Cry, the Beloved Country on the eve of a year living in Pretoria, South Africa. I took this picture during that year, at the Union Buildings in downtown Pretoria. It's always interesting to visit places you've read about, and this was both a sobering and inspiring place: Nelson Mandela was inaugurated here, at a building originally meant to symbolize the union of the British & Afrikaner governments. #setinSouthernHemisphere #junebookbugs

Set during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 in South-Africa.
This is the first fictional story I read about this topic that does not portray the Boers (farmers) as only good & heroic and the English as only bad & villainous!It shows the good/bad on both sides!Truly brilliant!

Day 27 #JuneBookBugs #setinsouthernhemisphere Here are nine books from my stacks that are set in the Southern Hemisphere in Africa (South Africa, Namibia & Rwanda) Australia, Chile, Tahiti, an unnamed South American country (Bel Canto), & an unnamed coral atoll (The Last Good Paradise). I've read all but Bel Canto which never seems to get to the top of my #TBR 📚

I haven't read The Last Anniversary yet...

After opening with a climactic shootout between Australian gang icon Ned Kelly and police, there's a #ManDown (Under! 😆). But what follows was recovered from the scene- reams of pages scrawled in Kelly's own hand describing what's really behind his notoriety that the papers left out. Picked this for #JuneTunz @Cinfhen before I even saw the #junebookbugs one for today- #setinsouthernhemisphere @RealLifeReading ✌👆
