Jack Maggs
Jack Maggs: A Novel | Peter Carey
13 posts | 12 read | 15 to read
The Booker Prize-winning author of Oscar and Lucinda returns to the nineteenth century in an utterly captivating mystery. The year is 1837 and a stranger is prowling London. He is Jack Maggs, an illegal returnee from the prison island of Australia. He has the demeanor of a savage and the skills of a hardened criminal, and he is risking his life on seeking vengeance and reconciliation. Installing himself within the household of the genteel grocer Percy Buckle, Maggs soon attracts the attention of a cross section of London society. Saucy Mercy Larkin wants him for a mate. The writer Tobias Oates wants to possess his soul through hypnosis. But Maggs is obsessed with a plan of his own. And as all the various schemes converge, Maggs rises into the center, a dark looming figure, at once frightening, mysterious, and compelling. Not since Caleb Carr's The Alienist have the shadowy city streets of the nineteenth century lit up with such mystery and romance. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

And there goes my 4th book from my #AxetheStacks pile & my 1st book for #AwesomeApril ! My reasons for feeling so-so ish about this book are bookish and personal. I love Dickens. I know he was in some respects an awful person IRL, but this “reimagining” of Great Expectations rubbed me the wrong way both on his behalf and on that of his fictional characters. So not for me but maybe for you because the writing and cleverness were well done. 🤓

Centique I think I‘d feel the same way you do! I love the original too much. 4y
Ruthiella @Centique I think I need to steer clear of reworks of classics. 😀 4y

It‘s almost time for the weeklong #AwesomeApril readathon hosted by the awesome @Andrew65 , the most chill readathon ever since you pick your own goals, be it one page or 1,000, one book or 20 books, etc.

If you are so inclined, please join in and post what you plan to read and what your progress is.

So far my only goal will be to finish the tagged book, but I‘m going to add some goals/books later. I like to start with a big pile! 😀

Andrew65 Thanks for sharing 😍 Good luck 😊👍 4y

🧞‍♀️I went in to Jack Maggs blind and it ended up being one of my favorite #1001Books reads.
🧞‍♀️I was bored with The Heart of Darkness. I‘ll try again, but I just wasn‘t into it as much as I wanted to be.
🧞‍♀️Wicked, The Queen‘s Fool, Interview w/ a Vampire, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd...I know there‘s more...
🧞‍♀️The Scarlet Letter made me hate Nathaniel Hawthorne‘s writing style with the fire of a thousand dragons with heartburn.

Jack Maggs is a reworking of Great Expectations centered on the character Jack Maggs (Magwich) and his quest to find his son Phipps (Pip). There are a whole host of unsavory characters including a less than ethical writer who seems to be a humorous portrayal of Dickens. I enjoyed it. It was well written and thoroughly engaging. I switched back and forth with audio - the narrator was fantastic!

Really liked this book and glad I read it but it took too long to read. Another read like this, for me, was The Master of #ColmToibin

I loved this book! I'm a Dickens nut. I haven't read Great Expectations yet, but after reading this, I can't wait. This is a re-telling of GE from the perspective of another character. I gobbled this up. It's a new favorite! 7/1,001 #1001Books

A retelling of Great Expectations from Magwitch's POV, this is a gripping & thoroughly enjoyable read, even if you've never read the original (or even if you can't stand Dickens). Highly recommended 👍
