Ancillary Justice | Ann Leckie

Still reading Ancillary Justice, which means my final total for #sfftbrchallenge is 45/50. Pretty good! And I will finish these last 5 over the summer.
Thanks for a fun challenge @DuckOfDoom !

wanderinglynn Great job! 👏🏻 I still need to tally my #SFFTBR. 5y
DuckOfDoom That a pretty Dune edition! Do you like Ancillary Justice so far? I did, but I heard from some others that it did not grip them as much 5y
llwheeler @DuckOfDoom I really like it so far! I could see how people who want very fast-paced, quick read type sci-fi might not like it as much. I am reading it slowly, but to me that's not a bad thing. Kind of nice to take the time to savour a book. 5y

Also I got my book order in the mail today, one for the #MayScavengerHunt challenge (the “no words” prompt) and the trilogy for the #SFFTBR reading challenge (I think either the shortest book prompt or one of the my choice prompts).

But really I ordered both because I couldn‘t decide between them!

Overall, a stellar book day. 🥳

It Devours!: A Welcome to Night Vale Novel | Joseph Fink, Jeffrey Cranor

Pickpick

Man alive I love the WTNV folk. I enjoyed the first novel a little better, perhaps, but this one was delightful.
If you‘re unfamiliar, the pod cast is a fun, sweet, creepy fictional community radio program from a desert town that is never boring.
The drawing out of the ending is totally within the way the Night Vale world works but I feel they‘ve done it more elegantly in live shows and on the pod cast.

Cinfhen I‘ve always been curious about Night Vale ~ great review 6y
jmofo I forgot! I had this as a part of my #SFFTBR challenge as a “my choice”!! 6y
jmofo @Cinfhen I, as you can tell, have a lot of love for Night Vale. I haven‘t listened in a bit, though. I‘ve gone to two live shows and I really adored the first book. Cecil is amazing in his range, so I recommend listening over reading. 💜 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great review. This was an easy pick for you, huh? 6y
jmofo @BarbaraTheBibliophage 🤓I was going to read the Lore book but then remembered this one! 6y

I think these are the reading challenges I‘m going to tackle next year. It will probably be like this year were I complete just one. But I shall try.

I‘m not doing beat the back list because last year the leader kind of gave up and there are no prompts this year. So I‘ll do Nancy Drew instead.

I need my head examined. 😬

jpmcwisemorgan I‘ve tried to do challenges for two years and have failed miserably so I‘m not trying in 2019. I‘m going to focus on getting caught up on series I‘ve started and do some book clubs. And read some of the bazillion ebooks I own! 6y
Literary_Siren I‘m going to do the Nancy Drew Challenge too. Although it‘s not really a challenge for me. Just a reread-a-thon. 😂 I have all the books so I‘m ready!! 6y
Traci1 Ooh, what's the Nancy Drew Challenge? 6y

JazzFeathers I'm very bad with challenges too, but l still try 😂 6y
jessinikkip @LibrarianRyan what are the sff tbr and mount tbr? Ive seen them mentioned but never really with an explanation and Im really looking for a good challenge to go along with my #ReadingUSA2019 chalenge 6y
LibrarianRyan @jessinikkip #SFFTBR challenge is the science fiction fantasy TBR. It runs July -June and is hosted by @DuckOfDoom (If I remember correctly). It‘s for SFF lovers like myself to get those specific backlogs of books read. Mount TBR is a good reads challenge that many littens do. You pick a mountain you want to climb and read any book as long as it is not a current year book. I do a small mountain of 36 books. 6y
jessinikkip Thanks!! 6y

Hopefully, by *finally* finishing this book (that I started in October), my way-too-lengthy reading slump is coming to an end. #SFFTBR

Overall, a solid 3.5 stars. Read my full review on Goodreads:

Saturday night: Rolos, a little easy knitting (more washcloths!!), working on solving poor Evelyn‘s murder, and starting my #SFFTBR buddy read with @LibrarianRyan

AlaMich I love Rolos! But I eat the whole roll in one sitting, so I never buy them. (edited) 6y
LibrarianRyan @AlaMich I too am bad about that. 😁 6y
mcipher @AlaMich @LibrarianRyan We got a whole BAG. I only took a handful to avoid too much temptation. 😉 6y

Mehso-so

A little underwhelmed. Not a bad book, but a bit on the predictable side. Plus the heroine annoyed me. #SFFTBR

Leniverse Yes, I thought it had potential but the world building was underdeveloped and the YA tropes abounded. I did like how the unbalanced power relationships were treated though. I'll give the second book a go and see where it's headed. 6y
Leniverse The love triangle creeped me out at first too. I kept thinking that he was grooming her and I hate it when YA books romanticise that sort of relationship. But then it turned out he really was a creep who was grooming her, and she felt sick that she fell for it and wanted him. I liked how that was problematised. 6y
Leniverse The creepy romance and the warnings about the king is why I think this can be used for "YA not for younger teens". "Powerful older men will rape you and get away with it" is an important message for, say 15+ but 13y olds should get only positive portrayals of equal relationships. Or so I think. 6y
See All 7 Comments
wanderinglynn @Leniverse I agree. I get the whole attraction to “older powerful man.” But why bother with the love triangle at all? I thought there was enough other conflict and the whole unrequited love with Mal that it didn‘t need this added complication. 6y
wanderinglynn @Leniverse Despite some flaws with character & world building, I did think it was written well. 👍🏻 6y
Leniverse Maybe because it‘s not really YA unless it has a love triangle? 😂 It seems to have become a genre trait, along with first person narrative by snarky teen with low self-esteem. 🙄 6y
wanderinglynn @Leniverse 😂 too true! 6y
