Year of Ravens: A Novel of Boudica's Rebellion | Ruth Downie, Eliza Knight, Kate Quinn, Stephanie Dray, Simon Turney, Russell Whitfield, Vicky Alvear

5+ stars! Seven authors each write in sequence from the viewpoints of different people about Rome‘s occupation of Britain, and the attempt of a queen of one of the tribes to force them out. Queen Boudica did exist; her story was told by the Roman historians. But this book follows other characters (one per author): another queen, a slave (Boudica‘s husband‘s illegitimate daughter), a Roman tribune, a Druid, a son of an important character, ⬇️

Texreader a warrior (Boudica‘s chief military official), and Boudica‘s daughters. The story is seamless despite being written by 7 people, and the threads of the story carry through ingeniously. There are unlikeable characters, but most (more than those listed above) end up being sympathetic. This is true even for some characters one might initially dislike. This is a marvelous book. I borrowed it but will try to find a copy to buy. Highly recommended. ⬇️ 13h

This book is astounding, written by 7–SEVEN-authors, about Queen Boudica‘s rebellion against Rome in Britain. Review to come. But in the Author‘s Notes, I thought it amazing that one of the authors gives so much credit to our #authoramonth Kate Quinn! I‘m so glad I read this book; it‘s a keeper (which means I‘ll have to buy a copy). I wouldn‘t have read it but for #authoramonth but I also needed it for #letterY for #litsyatoz. It‘s extraordinary.

Starting my craft retreat weekend tonight with some girlfriends. One of them is an avid reader like me. She treated us with ice cream or gelato and we shared our current books. It‘s like a crafting and read-your-own book club while ignoring your diets kind of weekend.

ChaoticMissAdventures That sounds amazing 😍 6d

Can't believe we've gone from snow and freezing rain to a random day at 20 Celsius!! Heading back down to colder temperatures tonight though ☹️. Staring this one for #authoramonth . I enjoyed the first book in this series so thought I'd give book 2 a read. Looking forward to journeying into Ancient Rome! @Soubhiville

Mehso-so

The narrator of this edition has a very nice voice - relaxing but not sleep inducing. I don‘t want to hold this book to modern expectations- it‘s two hundred years old. I appreciated learning more about important female figures such as Xenobia, even if the writing was condescending. I think the author had the empire last longer in his history than it actually did.
2/5 stars listen rather than read this for a classic historical work
