#PublishingPaidMe
Several authors have used this # to talk about their sold book advances. The discrepancy between authors of colour and white colour is horrible and sadly not surprising.
For example, N.K Jemisin got 25k each for her celebrated Broken Earth trilogy, while Y.A author Laura Sebastian earned 185k for Ash Princesses 1.

Lylah The discrepancy between YA books and adult books for the same genres was appalling to me; I never realized there was such a gap between the industries even when the adult books are by award-winning authors! 🙈 4y
thewallflower0707 @LylahDay the advance numbers for YA authors are ridiculously large. The publishers must have a lot of money laying around. Meanwhile, the advances for Roxane Gay are appallingly low. 4y
Lylah @thewallflower0707 right, even after she‘d published Bad Feminist! 4y
thewallflower0707 @Lylah at least both Gay & Jemisin sold out and earned a lot more through the sales. Still, looking at the numbers unknown YA author get for their debuts ... its unfair. Which is why these conversations are so important. 4y

Checking out the 🔥 #PublishingPaidMe hashtag on Twitter. It started as a way to highlight the disparity between what black authors are getting paid vs. non-black authors and I'm hoping more authors step in to add to the conversation and visibility. Crazy!!!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes... this whole “never talk about your salary thing” in any industry is a way to divide people, and pay demonstrably different wages based often on whim and prejudice. 4y
vivastory There's also the issue of if you're writing nf that oftentimes you now have to pay for your own fact checkers out of your advance. Publishers won't perform the most basic fact checking to support authors anymore. 4y
ephemeralwaltz @vivastory wow, thanks for this. I had no idea. 4y
Emilymdxn That‘s such an excellent important thing to talk about! Being open about what we earn is so hard for people and there‘s so much pressure not to be open about it which ends up hurting women of colour the most. 4y
