Mehso-so

Meh, this was a bit soapy & predictable for me! I loved the Russian Revolution timeline but the second modern day strand was really depressing. The final ‘revelation‘ about Zoya‘s identity was obvious for page 1 and kinda made my eyes roll! 🙄 like that! #authoramonth #monthofBoyne

Samplergal Loved this one. Predicable yes. Well written. Yes. Sorry you didn‘t enjoy as much as I did. 6y
Caroline2 @Samplergal yeah I love his writing so I really wanted to like it but maybe I‘ve studied the Russian revolution too much for my history degree so this felt a bit daft! 🤷‍♀️ 6y
TrishB I enjoyed this one too @Samplergal sometimes I think not knowing the history makes it easier! 6y

Caroline2 @TrishB Definitely!!! I think you‘ve hit the nail on the head there! I‘m finding it really hard to enjoy historical fiction lately (my fav genre!!) 😔 6y
TrishB I‘m the same! I get annoyed when I find errors or just don‘t agree with the authors interpretation. My list of authors I like is getting smaller and smaller! (Historical!) (edited) 6y
Caroline2 @TrishB me too!! I‘ve become one of those awful people that start shouting, “that‘s not historically accurate!!”?! Which is daft as it‘s fiction but the more I try & ignore it the more irritated I get and I just sit there tutting! 😂 6y
TrishB I think if the facts are out there it‘s perfectly acceptable to yell!! Interpretation is slightly different as that‘s personal opinions about facts. Then I guess you either like it or don‘t. I can‘t read Philippa Gregory as I disagree with most, if not all, of her interpretations! 6y
Samplergal @Caroline2 oh yes! One must block out the facts and go with blurred lines. It is fiction I‘m okay with fuzzy facts in a fictional book. 6y
Caroline2 @TrishB that‘s a good distinction to make! I don‘t like Hilary Mantel‘s interpretations either! And I‘m sorry but Anastasia did not survive!!!! 🙄 6y
TrishB I agree 😁 but I like Mantel 🤷‍♀️ 6y
quietlycuriouskate I couldn't agree more about the obviousness. I kept thinking it must be a deliberate misdirection, but no. 😟 6y
Tamra Shoot, I‘m going to unstack. 6y
Caroline2 @kathedron I thought it was a massive red herring...but no! 😔 6y
Caroline2 @Tamra you might like it tho?! 🤷‍♀️ lots of people do! 👍🏻 6y
Tamra @Caroline2 if it‘s predictable & cheesy, no thanks. This is why I 💜 Litsy. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Hmmm. I have this in my TBR and love Boyne, so I‘ll still give it a go, but thanks for the heads up! 6y

Last month I read 13 books. This House is Haunted & Cappuccinos, Cupcakes & a Corpse were my favorites.
For #monthofBoyne I read A Ladder to the Sky & This House is Haunted. Both were good. For #subjectofthemonth which was historical fiction I meant to read Hunting Prince Dracula (which I haven't finished yet) but This House is Haunted works for that. Also I didn't get around to Crippen by Boyne which I still mean to.
A good month though 😺

kspenmoll Sounds like Some great books- well done!!! 6y

This was a really good book. I admit I enjoyed This House is Haunted more but that's mainly because I love ghost stories. This book was quite a twisted tale of a desperate writer who would do anything for a story. Maurice was quite the bastard 😼

Soubhiville I‘m just about to start this audio! Glad you liked it. 6y
Reviewsbylola I was so impressed by this one. I‘ve yet to read a Boyne I didn‘t love! 6y
minkyb What amazes me is no matter how different the topic his writing is incredible. 6y

Once again, John Boyne‘s writing has blown me away. He has an amazing talent for getting us inside the mind of his characters, and in this case, that resulted in my heart being ripped out and stomped on, but that‘s ok. REALLY.💔

I had an idea how the WWI story was going to go early on, but I was still engaged and ultimately astounded. What a painful, beautiful, sad story. Michael Maloney‘s narration was perfect, too.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m so excited that it‘s finally #24in48 #readathon 😃

First, I‘m finishing Unsheltered by Kingsolver on audio, and then I will be reading from this stack through the weekend.

I also have The Absolutist on audio for #MonthOfBoyne that I plan to listen to while I can‘t sit to read.

I‘m going to try for a few hours before I sleep tonight!

vivastory Happy reading, friend! 🤘👏🙌 6y

A wild ride of literary ambition. I just adored this book! I keep typing and erasing sentences because I don't want to give anything away but I want you to pick up this book if you haven't already!! Manipulation, surprises, history, modern day, literary/bookish scenes abound. Just excellent. This man is fabulous #johnboyne -- I am reading more of your books!!! Recommended 🌟

Chelsea.Poole #monthofboyne love this guy! 6y

I received this a year ago from the generous @MinDea but have been putting it off because I know it‘s a heart breaker and I don‘t step into that willingly. But between the #monthofBoyne and thinking it could be a cathartic read, I finally decided to jump in. The epigraph and first paragraph had me laughing and hooked me right away, so I‘m not as scared and am looking forward to the ride! Boyne‘s writing has captured me already at just 24 pages.

JaclynW This is such a wonderful book. 6y
