Enjoyed this overall. I love how SMG weaves in Aztec history from pre-colonial Mexico City. It took me down many rabbit holes. This neon noir has vampire gang wars, human narco wars, a whole lot of bloodshed, plus a dash of romance. I get why Atl was how she was, but Domingo was a sweetheart and deserved better lol. The ending was a bit rushed and kind of sad. I‘d welcome a sequel! 3.5⭐️s #HauntedShelf #BlackCatCrew #Phantasmal #BookRecommendation

SamAnne One of my favorites of hers! 1mo
KT1432 Oh cool @SamAnne ! I really want a sequel lol. What‘s another one you enjoyed? I‘ve only also read Mexican Gothic and loved it. 1mo
SamAnne @KT1432 I enjoyed Silver Nitrate. Not a perfect novel but a ride! Set in the 1970s Mexico City film industry! Throw in some occult and Nazis who fled Germany after WWII and it‘s a ride. I really wanted to learn more about the history the novel is based on. 1mo
KT1432 Ahh okay cool I actually have a copy of that one lol! Just haven‘t read it yet! @SamAnne 1mo

Not my favorite by this author but still a good read.
A coming-of-age/dual timeline story, involving teenagers casting spells by spinning the perfect record 🪄🎶.
She loses the plot a little, but never the characters ♥️

Reggie I love this book so much. Untamed Shore is my favorite by her but this is a close 2nd. 1mo

Happy Indigenous Peoples‘ Day! Perfect timing that I‘m reading this book today as I finish the #JustOneMoreChapter #readathon. SMG includes a lot of #indigenous history in her stories based in Mexico, in this story the history of the great Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan prior to being colonized and Mexico City built on top of its ruins. This is an impressive 3D reconstruction of the city. https://tenochtitlan.thomaskole.nl #HauntedShelf #BlackCatCrew

It‘s been such a busy week that I passed out this evening so I haven‘t had a great start to this #readathon, but I will be joining! Hoping to get through these books this weekend and rack up some more points for #HauntedShelf #BlackCatCrew. Tagged is my current read and cover #ScavengerHunt for Green (dog‘s tattoo). #JustOneMoreChapter

(2015) Moreno-Garcia's debut novel is a YAish book about three high school kids in 1988 Mexico City who use music to work magic, in a dual timeline with a story about their adult selves reconnecting twenty years later. The 1988 story is appealing and its high school character dynamics ring true for me. It's less clear to me what the author intended with the later timeline, which for my taste could have been omitted. Soft pick.

Reggie That Meche, even on the last page, so stubborn! lol I loved this book so much and all the music references. I loved the explanation of her name from her dad……🎶Gracias a la vida🎵. Nice review. 4mo
swynn @Reggie Definitely appreciated the music references, since so many were new to me. I spent a lot of time on YouTube while reading this! 4mo

Thank you so much @Nazgul93 !!! I‘m so excited to cozy up with this bag of Reese‘s and start one of these books — but I can‘t decide which one! And I love the Beetlejuice bookmark! Thanks again!! #AHRS #AllHallowsReadSwap

Nazgul93 I'm glad you liked everything! Certain dark things is one of my favorite vampire books! I meant to write a note but totally forgot, sorry! And my mom said that Butcher & blackbird is really good! 13mo

3 ⭐️s
This was going to be 5 ⭐️s with the unique lore and world building; the characters were so relatable and I was SO invested in them and their struggles. Then that ending comes and punches you right in the chest. I felt like the ending took away the whole point of the story. If there‘s ever a sequel, I will absolutely rush to snatch it up because I need closure. 😅🤣

In this fascinating noirish novel, Domingo, a young man who scavenges trash in the vampire-free zone of Mexico City, gets caught up in a deadly war between rival vampire families when he meets Atl, a young vampire on the run. Atl is the descendent of high priestesses who defended Aztec temples, her enemies a gang of vicious newcomers. Unique and intriguing world-building, vivid characters and a distinctive setting made this an exceptional read.

booklover3258 I want to read all of her books! This will be my next one after Untamed Shore. 14mo
