Squib | Nina Bawden

Pickpick

Squib surprised me at how dark it is but also how brilliantly Nina Bawden writes about the thoughts and feelings of children and the ways in which they might handle difficult situations. A full review would have to spoil the plot for this book so I'll just end with a note on the gorgeous cover art of the puffin edition, by the late, great Shirley Hughes.

🌀I received 2 copies of the physical book and yet I'm reading a Kindle version from the library.
🌀it's a 4 of 5 star book.
🌀I highlight using my Kindle, sometimes I use a notebook. If I own the book and plan to keep it, I'll take notes and underline, but I don't care for highlighter pens in my books. I love post-its.

Wow! I didn‘t see that ending coming. Eleven-year-old, lovable Izzy deals with her parents‘ divorce, racism, and finding her place in the world as a “blended” mixed kid.
I‘ve seen this called The Hate U Give for #mgfiction which seems an accurate description, not cherry-coated but written at a level #middlegrades can process.
Good addition to a classroom library. 4⭐️

Middle of the night feeding reading. Maybe my granddaughter will enjoy this series someday.
The second book in this series, which I read first, was better than this one imo. But I can still see this being a pick for tween girls.

The first book I thought of immediately for today‘s #LiteraryLuck prompt was this #MGFiction about The Great Hunger in #Ireland. So well done. I really enjoy Patricia Reilly Giff.

5 Reasons I love this book:
1. You can tell the author loved Anastasia Krupnik as a kid.
2. I did too.
3. It was nostalgic.
4. It made me feel like a kid again.
5. Lists!

I hope there is more to come! If you don‘t like #mgfiction consider this as a gift for a kid you know.

Such a cute concept for #mgfiction. Everything in texts with the occasional email or note passed in class. This was second in a series but I was able to jump right into it not knowing anything about the first.

While this is not one of my favorite reads ever, it did teach me about a part of American history I had no idea about. There was a period of time when French nobles immigrated to Pennsylvania and were actually anticipating Marie Antoinette‘s arrival. I had no clue.
