Cloud Atlas | David Mitchell

Two of the six narratives in Cloud Atlas take place on pretty islands. I'm a fan of The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing, even though it seems like the least discussed storyline. Even though it's the quietest, Mitchell nails the classic British novel style, and the island has a mysterious quality that is fun to explore.

Cinfhen I bailed early on this book with regrets. I think I would have enjoyed more if the timing was different. I read Slade House but wasn‘t such a fan 😞 5y

Billypar @Cinfhen I think it's one I would recommend trying again when the time is right. He has a style that carries over to Slade House, but they're such different books that I wouldn't say opinion on one would predict feelings on the other. 5y

Island: The Collected Stories of Alistair MacLeod | Alistair MacLeod

Cape Breton, part of Nova Scotia, is not typically what comes to mind for #laislabonita, although it is very beautiful in a cold, rocky, rugged, soaring kind of way.
The stories in this collection are set there. MacLeod left as a young man, but Cape Breton haunted his imagination. I'm not a "Caper" but these stories capture life in Atlantic Canada. They amazed me when I read them as an undergrad. I still think about them.

The Summer Book | Tove Jansson, Thomas Teal, Kathryn Davis

This book is composed of brief, individual, quiet moments between 6 year old Sophie and her crabby grandmother spending their summer on an island off the coast of Finland. I found it a bit slow to get into but ultimately sweet and sentimental 💕

emilyhaldi @Cinfhen funny enough, my husband was in LA last weekend with a Kanye-obsessed friend who convinced him to attend the Sunday service... he found it interesting that they sang a lot of his older songs that even sans expletives are not completely innocent 😆 he thought the whole thing was completely bizarre. 5y

Cinfhen My son was at Coachella and attended Kanye‘s Sunday Service ~ he said it was not a very church like experience but Kanye like Madonna is an entertainer and constantly reinventing himself. Humility is definitely not in his vocabulary @MicheleinPhilly but as a performer I give him credit @BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi 5y
