Aunt Susanna's Thanksgiving Dinner | Lucy Maud Montgomery
post image
Pickpick

Another good short story for #KindredSpiritsChristmas - Four sisters who live on their own have a rich & very opinionated Aunt Susanna. Two of them are tasked with making Thanksgiving dinner for her & her guests, & problems arise when the neighbors‘ dog gets in the house & destroys the turkey & sides. It all works out & Aunt Susanna decides to pay for one of the girls to go to college. Cute & cozy as always. 4⭐️

Elizabeth and Her German Garden | Elizabeth Von Arnim

I see that the rest of my group who read this for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead had mixed feelings about this one & I totally understand where you all are coming from. I didn‘t love this book but found it oddly enjoyable. Elizabeth & her friend Irais were pretty funny imo & I love how she calls her husband the Man of Wrath 😆 & we don‘t even know his name (he was an ass lol). I can totally see why LMM loved it because she was absolutely crazy ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 About flowers and her garden & I‘m sure she could relate to Elizabeth as a kindred spirit. Does she talk about this book in her journals? I haven‘t gotten around to reading them yet. So like I said, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would but can understand everyone‘s complaints about it. 🤓 4⭐️ #HauntedShelf #FrightClub #TBRread #LMM @Jadams89 (edited) 2mo
BarbaraJean Yes, LMM does talk about it in her journals! (That's the main reason I added it to our buddy read) She loved it and said Elizabeth was her “twin soul“ when it came to gardening 😊 2mo
JenlovesJT47 @BarbaraJean awesome, I had a feeling! I‘ve read a bunch of books about LMM and she was obsessed with flowers & gardening & was an amateur photographer as well. If you haven‘t read this one I‘d highly recommend it 2mo
BarbaraJean I've had that one on my list!! I think I've seen it on Hoopla. Maybe we'll have to add it into the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead sometime in 2025! 2mo
JenlovesJT47 @BarbaraJean awesome! They have a bunch of LMM‘s photographs in this book, the ones she took of her gardens. 2mo

I‘m slowly working my way through my library‘s supply of Anne of Green Gables retellings. In this one, the parallels were not quite as clear for all of the characters but I still ended up enjoying it. Chipper approves. 👍🏻 3.5⭐️

This is a beautiful book filled with gorgeous pictures of Prince Edward Island, many of them taken by LMM herself. I don‘t think there is anyone who is better at describing scenery than LMM and she has such an ability to transport you to another time. Highly recommended for fans of Anne, LMM or even if you just love flowers. 5⭐️

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead #LMM Journals - Discussion

📚What are your thoughts on this week's reading?
📚What sections or quotes stand out to you?
📚Why do you think LMM chose to write in her journal about Anne of Green Gables and Ewan‘s courtship only after the fact?

This section closes with the publication of AoGG, so we‘ll start Anne of Green Gables next week! Next Saturday (July 27) we‘ll discuss chapters 1-19.

TheAromaofBooks This was a tough section to read. I felt so bad for Maud and the way that she was so isolated away from any intelligent, congenial company. I've been helping caregive for a difficult grandmother who sounds a lot like Maud's, and I can't imagine that being my only, constant company. I was surprised at how little she mentioned Anne, even after saying that the manuscript had been accepted she never mentions any updates after that until the book ⬇ 5mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) arrives. As for Ewan, it was interesting that she doesn't mention him basically at all, considering how regularly she talks about other people in her life, and how (theoretically) open she was about her feelings for Edwin and Herman. Like we discussed briefly on your other post, there is definitely a sense of settling here. She's so lonely and so completely out of options. I think she viewed Ewan as a “safe“ choice to give her the home ⬇ 5mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and children she wanted. But it still seems like a minister is the last person she should have married, not just because of her own indifference towards organized religion, but because she KNEW all the demands that it would make on her and knew that it meant being somewhat homeless in the sense that you are at the mercy of what church “calls“ you or doesn't, never having your own real place. Out of the various people she could have ⬇ 5mo

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) “settled“ for, a minister seems like a terrible choice.

Her descriptions of depression were very moving. I have never been that down before, but I do get mild seasonal depression (I think everyone in the midwest does... the sun just doesn't shine for five months!!!!) and I related to the joy she felt in being able to get outside, feel the sunshine, embrace some trees, and get her hands in the dirt. I was SO furious with her uncle for ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) taking away her garden! I know we are getting a somewhat biased account, but he just sounds like an absolutely terrible person.

So I'm glad we're breaking up the journals a bit with some warmer, more optimistic reading. I'm enjoying the journals, but some of the sections are tough sledding. :-/

lauraisntwilder @TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean I'm finally caught up on the journals, so I'm looking back over your discussion from previous weeks. I agree Maud had seasonal depression, but to an extreme. Not only does the world grow cold and dark, but she's truly cut off from the outside world when the mail stops running. No one sends her letters, no one comes to pick up their mail, and she can't even go to her room! 4mo
TheAromaofBooks @lauraisntwilder - The room thing really got me! There is something horrid about not having a single bit of privacy or space to call your own. 4mo
BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder Glad you were able to catch up! The journals are not happy/quick reading! @TheAromaofBooks Me too on the room thing! The bios said she had to sleep downstairs in winter because it was too cold--which made a certain amount of sense. I hadn't realized it was too cold because her grandmother wouldn't allow her to light the fire in her room!! That made me even more frustrated with her grandmother. That's WAY beyond “set in her ways.“ 4mo

Better extremely late than never for the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead 😆! I adored this book and all of the expertly woven family drama, and of course, LMM‘s beautiful descriptions of nature. Her books are a mood and if I could only pick one word to describe them, I‘d go with “cozy”. 🥰 5⭐️

Kilmeny of the Orchard | Lucy M Montgomery

I am so loving reading all of the LMM books I had never gotten to before. Kilmeny of the Orchard has all the charm and warmth of her other books. I think that‘s what I like most about them - escaping to a different time filled with interesting people and beautiful descriptions of various places in PEI. Best way I can describe it is they give you the warm fuzzies. The story itself gets a tad predictable at various points but it doesn‘t bother ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Me here. As far as I‘m concerned, we all need a few Happily Ever Afters every now and then. 4⭐️ #historicalfiction #LMM 3y

I thoroughly enjoyed my return to The Golden Road. There were a lot of great moments and the ending was bittersweet. I wish there were books about the kids after they were grown up. I think it‘s time to watch Road To Avonlea again. Thanks for organizing the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead @BarbaraJean ! 5⭐️

BarbaraJean You're welcome! It's been so much fun! I'd never watched Road to Avonlea... but after reading these two, I tracked down the DVDs in my county library system and am watching my way through! 😊 3y

Finally tried Audible and currently listening to Ari & Dante audiobook read by Lin Manuel Miranda 👍
I'm not sure what I like best, the actual (lovely) book or Lin's voice!

The Pretty Girls audiobook video was taken off YT before I finished it so I guess I learned my lesson haha
