This is the story of how I became Anne of Greenville. It's also the story of how I found my true true, and how I needed to maybe come to Greenville, of all places, to make that happen. In this modern reimagining of Anne of Green Gables, Anne is an ABBA-loving singer/actor/writer of disco-operas, queer, Japanese-American who longs to be understood for her artistic genius. Recently relocated to middle-of-nowhere Greenville and starting at a new school, Anne has a tendency to A) fall in love quickly, deeply, and effervescently and B) fly off the handle in the face of jerks. Both personality quirks quickly come into play when the soccer team boos the premiere of her disco performance, whichin a roundabout wayintroduces her to her new BFF, Berry, and she soon after meets the girl of her dreams, Gilly. Falling quickly into that age-old trap of ignoring the best friend for the new crush, Anne soon becomes embroiled in a series of dramatic and unfortunate events, and quickly finds herself wrapped up in a love triangle she never expected. Is she MTB with Gilly? Or is Berry her true soul mate? Only time (or 304 pages) will tell. In this coming-of-age novel by fan-favorite author Mariko Tamaki, see the classic tale in a whole new light. Refreshingly bold and unapologetically unique, Anne of Greenville will make you want to stand up and sing!

Mehso-so

I wanted a little more from this one. It fell kind of flat for me.
I've come to a realization that, during the school year, I only have enough brain capacity to read young adult books. Not that they don't have literary merit, but they tend to be more fast-paced and hold my attention when I'm over-stimulated in every other sense. That said, I'm going to the library for a big YA haul tomorrow. What should I pick up?

shortsarahrose I totally relate to not necessarily having the brain space for capital L “Literature” all the time. I‘ve been reading a lot of genre fiction this year (romance, horror, YA, etc). Not that long ago I read Last Night at the Telegraph Club, which was a really good historical queer YA love story/coming of age story. 2mo
Rachel.Rencher @shortsarahrose Ooh, sounds fun! I'll pick it up. 🥰 2mo

I‘m slowly working my way through my library‘s supply of Anne of Green Gables retellings. In this one, the parallels were not quite as clear for all of the characters but I still ended up enjoying it. Chipper approves. 👍🏻 3.5⭐️

This version of Anne is delightful. She‘s a queer half-Japanese teen with two mums. She loves disco, vintage clothes, and roller skating. Her family just moved to the small town of Greenville, where she just can‘t seem to stay out of trouble. Tamaki captures the spirit of Anne really well. She‘s unique, quirky, and has a quick temper, which causes problems. The issues that Anne faces are a lot more difficult, such as racism and homophobia.

MallenNC This sounds really good. 2y

Re-reading some classic children‘s stories with my babies & loving new adaptations like the tagged selection 🛼 This reimagined Anne Shirley is updated but certainly still recognizable 🌈
