#JuneTanz #CruelSummer

This is an history of the Comanche l haven't read yet. I've read a lot of Native American history, especially a couple of years ago. Sometimes l had to stop to get some breath.
And because l love myself, now l'm reading about WWI and fascism 😧

A Rage in Harlem | Chester Himes

#JuneTanz #Gold

This is a very peculiar crime novel set in Harlem in the 1950s (it also written in the 1950s). It starts off with a fraud ment to steal a chest of gold, and it goes on to be a rollercoster of adventures.

Plenty of violence in here, and still the storytelling is so humourous and surreal it creates a world that is at times even endearing.

I really enjoyed it

myers85 I've been meaning to read this for years. It's been sat in my kindle collection untouched. I think I'll make the effort to read it soon now. 8y
JazzFeathers @myers85 lt wasn't any effort for me. It's very werid, but also very witty. Great pace, great characters (the supporting cast too) great action. I've read other books from this series, but none as good as this one (though l've not read Cotton Comes to Harlem yet, which is supposed to be the best in the series 😆) 8y
vivastory Coffin Ed Johnson & Gravedigger Jones are the greatest nicknames. 8y

myers85 I came across this book after reading a few Jim Thompson books. Do you know if they're similar at all? 8y
JazzFeathers @vivastory They're great characters too. Particularly in this novel 😆 8y
JazzFeathers @myers85 l've never read Thompson, but l looked him up on google and doesn't look like Himes resembles him. Himes's fiction isn't noir. It's stright crime fiction, sometimes extremely action-centred. But sure, his characters are very particular 😉 8y
RealBooks4ever How have I never heard of the Harlem Cycle series?! I am unworthy... 😞 8y
myers85 Ah ok, I'll still give it a go though! But also try Thompson, he's incredible. 8y
JazzFeathers @RealBooks4ever Admittingly, it isn't one of the the best known 😉 8y
JazzFeathers @myers85 l'll definitely guve him a go. Can't miss on anyghing noir 😆 Thank so much for mentioning him 8y

#JuneTanz #Afterlife

Sorry, couldn't find the right novel in English, so l tagged another from this author

Luigi Alfredo Ricciardi is a police detective in 1920s Naples... and he sees ghosts.
He can see a dead person how he/she was a moments before dying and hear their last words. That's non as handy as you'd think for a detective and sometimes it rises more questions than it answers.

This is a fantasy story set in a tropical-like country. First of a trilogy.
Complex and believeable political climate, plots, mysteries, lots of humour. It's a very different steampunk with likable characters and lots of action.
Honestly, l loved it

So happy l gave The Hobbit #OneMoreTry
When l read it the first time as a teenager, l didn't think much of it. I thought it was quite childish and l preferred other fantasy storie.

The as an adult l reread it for an assignment. I remember l was reading the arrival of the dwarves at Bilbo's and kept thinking, "Wait! Wait! This isn't the book l read as a kid. This is absolutely fantastic. I love it! How can this be the same book?"

This is the first book l read by David Gemmell, the one l fell in love with him with. It's a hard fantasy story where a small band of soldiers fight against all hopes on the gate to their homeland against an overwhelming enemy. It was inspired by the Thermopylae historical event.

I'm fascinated with the question of identity, both personal and cultural. Maybe this is why l read so many authors belonging to traditional cultures, who address the relationship between tradition and modernity.
I like to believe one doesn't exclude the other.

David Gemmell is one of my favorit authors and this book is one of my favourite stories by him.
Just loved the idea of the multiverse, of different futures and the way the may shirt. Love so many ideas from this series... and Shannow is just such a complex character. Loved it

TrishB I love fantasy yet I've never read Gemmell! Where's the best place to start? 8y
Cinfhen Sounds super dark, but 👍🏻for today's prompt 8y
JazzFeathers @TrishB l'd start as l did with his first book, Legend. He's an authore who matured dramatically as he wrote, so it's worth following his evolution like it happend. Legend is still one of my favourite books from him, really quintessential of his esthetics 8y
JazzFeathers @Cinfhen l wouldn't really call it dark... but maybe it is 😉 8y
TrishB @JazzFeathers - thanks I will add to the list 😀 8y
