I read a lot of crime novels, + it is rare to read a genre bk in which the themes + quality of writing stand out, but this 3rd in the Laidlaw series was remarkable. Several scenes stood out, including laidlaw holding the hand of the dying mother of a criminal because she reflects a generation of Glasgow women. The story is about the death of the detective's brother + is fused with reflections on family and the fragility of life. Definitely 5*
Although I didn‘t like some of the writing it was an okay read . It is a little different but overall a good read
It‘s time for the #FabulousFebruary readathon! My goals:
FINISH
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Now You See Them
A Wild and Heavenly Place
Emma (maybe?)
START
The Last Widow
This is a low pick because it was a bit too disturbing for me.Gritty, grim Glasgow.Sexual abuse of children,a psychopath, new drugs&McCoy‘s own issues with alcohol&drug abuse&he struggles with his distressing childhood. At least now he has a new smart feminist girlfriend who seems stable. What I enjoyed most were the soccer references to rival teams Celtic& Rangers-my husband is a huge Celtic fan-&setting of the novel:Glasgow in the 1970s.
Grim, dark, triggers: sexual assault, abuse of children, but the writing is so good. Set in January 1973, Glasgow, this is the first case in the Harry McCoy series. A young prostitute is shot dead in broad daylight, her murderer commits suicide. McCoy is the 30 year old detective, a broken man with a drug lord friend and prostitute girlfriend, leading the investigation.
This is turning into a very enjoyable series in which DC Harry McCoy treads the Glasgow streets of 1973/74. Here a girl has gone missing, but Harry is sidelined in the hunt for her , however, he gets drawn into the mysterious death of 60s pop star Bobby march and the increasing heroin epidemic on the streets. Roll on April.
