I‘ve been reading a few pages at a time off and on today so that I‘m caught up to the end of chapter 11, and I hope to read another chapter this evening in order to be back on track for the coming week. The last few chapters have had a fairly melancholy tone, and I‘m curious to see where things go from here. It seems things are not looking great for Genji at the moment.

Lcsmcat I love your mug! 6y
Lindy @Lcsmcat Looks like a cherry blossom mug—it matches the story! 🌸 6y
Daisey @Lcsmcat @Lindy It's a color change cherry blossom mug, so the blooms only show up when it is heated. I thought it was an appropriate choice to go with this book today. 6y

Lindy @Daisey Colour change… awesome! 6y
Lcsmcat @Daisey Cool! 6y
Tanisha_A Love cherry blossoms! Love your mug! 6y
batsy Love the matching mug! And I agree about the melancholy tone that fits with Genji's current circumstances and the seasonal change. 6y
Daisey @Tanisha_A Thank you! 6y
Daisey @batsy Thanks! The mood does fit, but I‘m ready for it to change somewhat again. 6y

“The passing years never effaced his feeling for any lady he had known, although this only aroused in many the sorrows of the lovelorn.”

saresmoore Oh, I love this painting! 6y
Lindy @saresmoore Look at the cloth layers in assorted colours! Also, nice portrayal of an encounter on opposite sides of a curtain. 6y
saresmoore It‘s gorgeous. Her written descriptions are wonderfully evocative, so the image only enlivens the text for me. The layered cloth reminds me of a stack of origami paper, or, I suppose, Genji‘s stationery. 🙂 6y

Daisey I really like this painting and appreciate all of the images you‘re sharing. 6y
SoniaC So beautiful. Thanks for posting these. They add a lot to the reading. 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit Thanks for sharing this! Adds depth to the discussions. 6y
batsy I love this for depicting how they must have conversed through the screens. 6y

The synopsis that accompanies this painting states that chapter 11 “forms a brief interlude between the events of the previous chapter (in which Genji‘s downfall is planned by his political adversaries) and the suffering of the next (in which their plans are carried out).” I was grateful for the brevity. #Genji11

saresmoore I was grateful for the brevity, too, but I‘m also eager for some karmic retribution! 6y
SoniaC Can‘t wait to get home and dive into chapter 11! 6y

I grew up in a tiny town in central Florida, practically surrounded by orange groves. The scent of orange blossoms makes me nostalgic, too.

The theme of mutability (evanescence, ephemerality) is becoming so prominent, this book is beginning to read like a mash-up of Job, Psalms, and Ecclesiastes from the Old Testament of the Bible.

batsy That's so interesting, especially for a text steeped in Buddhism and Shintoism. My project for one of these days is to read the Bible. Maybe in 2020 😅 6y
saresmoore @batsy *whispers* don‘t do it... 6y
saresmoore @batsy Studying ancient and medieval history with my girls has revealed to me just how much the sacred texts, stories, rituals of all kinds of religions have in common! It‘s been so neat to draw connections with Lucy & Elliott. A lot of times, they‘re quicker to pick up on themes of mythos and religious pathos than I am. 6y

Zelma 👋 I grew up in central Florida too. I couldn‘t wait to leave at 18 but I keep being pulled back. 6y
batsy 😂 One of my profs told us that a degree in English Lit requires some knowledge of the Bible, and it's quite true, I think. But it helps that nowadays one can always turn to Google 🙃 Studies in ancient history with your kids sounds amazing and a lot of fun. Children have such a sense of acceptance and wonder. 6y
Lindy @saresmoore What a great passage, and it‘s good to hear how you connect with it on a personal level. 🍊I‘ve still got 18 pages to go on yesterday‘s chapter, because of catching up with things at home after my holiday, then being too sleepy to read in the evening. 6y
saresmoore @Zelma I got outta there so fast! But it turned out to be the setting of the first novel I sat down to write, though, so I guess it left an impact on me. 6y
saresmoore @batsy Their wonderment of late has been at the absurdity of religion‘s influence on society. I think I may be accidentally raising atheists. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
saresmoore @Lindy You deserve a good rest! I just hope Genji doesn‘t wander through your dreams and ruin your peaceful slumber with his unending self-pity. 🙃 6y
saresmoore @batsy I think the highlights are the books I mentioned above. Much of the Torah is a snoozefest. There are neat translations out there that highlight the poetry and I could recommend/send some decent works of criticism on the wisdom literature and prophets if you‘re interested! 🤓 6y
Lindy @saresmoore I‘ve just now got to the line you quoted yesterday, where Genji slips under Fujitsubo‘s curtain. During the week that I spent with my brother and sister, I enjoyed giving them daily updates on the latest Genji scandals. 6y
saresmoore @Lindy I love that! I‘ve been dying to share with someone, but my husband tends to glaze over, so I‘m grateful for the buddy readers. 6y
Lindy @batsy Genesis is interesting, but I suggest skimming past all the begats. 6y
batsy @saresmoore Yes, please! I'd love that, Sara. I'd appreciate your recommendations 😘 (and you know me; there's a whole bunch of books that's gonna distract me before this project, so please take as long as you need 😆) 6y
batsy @Lindy Thanks for the tip. I foresee quite a bit of skimming 😁 6y
Zelma @saresmoore 😂 I think I told my folks at age 12 that I couldn‘t wait to move away. I ended up back here due to Mr. Z‘s job for 3 years as an adult but we fled again. I still feel at home there though. Even if I never want to move back! 6y
TheWordJar Still catching up with Genji, but I agree that studying ancient and medieval history and the origins of all these religions for homeschool has been eye-opening. It‘s been my favorite part. I‘m not sure if I completely forgot everything from school or if we never even went over it (guessing it‘s the latter). I‘m right there with your daughters...it‘s definitely strengthening my atheistic tendencies. 6y
